"Quiet Hearts"

(by Amy Stroup) Quiet Hearts - The Other Side of Love Sessions

This has been a good week! I got to hold babies at a four-year-old's birthday party one morning, which is always super! But what's even more super is the fact that the birthday party was at Nichole's, and she is now my neighbor! :) I finally got to have a baking date with Amy one afternoon this week! It has been waaaay too long since we've baked yummy goodness together! Elly & I did a little shopping this evening! We both had gift cards to spend, so she asked if she could go to Target and the mall with me. {Have I mentioned that I love the fact that she likes to go shopping with me?!} And today was Norm's memorial service, which was a beautiful celebration of a life well-lived.

Baby girl went to a birthday party last night, and my sweet boy went with me to drop her off & pick her up. We had almost two hours to kill, so we decided to go to dinner. We wanted froyo after dinner, but we decided to let our food settle a little while we went for a drive. We found a park where he climbed trees & did a little parkour on the playground equipment while I hung out on the swings :)

So...I'm basically famous. OK, not really, but I was on the news the other day. I had the video embedded in this post, but it made blogger do crazy things. So you can see the video here. Laurien & I were eating lunch at Torchy's while there was a jewelry store burglary going on about a block away. At the time that we were filmed walking across the street, we had no idea what had happened. We saw the police tape & news vans, but we didn't know why they were there until later.

Today's song is {once again} not accurate. I don't remember if I told y'all that my iPod isn't scrobbling anymore, so it makes it very difficult to know what I've listened to the most. But I picked today's song because it came on while baby girl and I were watching Switched at Birth tonight. And I like Amy Stroup. ü

I hope y'all are having a super great weekend! ♥

"10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)"

(by Matt Redman) 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) - 10,000 Reasons

Y'all may recall when my family had dinner at the home of an older couple from church last Fall. Since that time, Norm was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and yesterday he got his long-standing wish: to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have never known anyone who so looked forward to going home, as you can see in the video below:

Though Norm would probably prefer that I post an old hymn, I keep thinking of the following lines from today's song. This was his heart:

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near, and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
10,000 years and then forevermore

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." (Psalm 116:15)

"You Set Me Free"

(by Angie Miller) You Set Me Free - You Set Me Free - Single

This week has been a little bit weird, but mostly good. There may be other things that are worth mentioning, but off the top of my head...We went to my mom's and saw her, my step-dad, and my brother's family on Sunday! I dropped my phone in a cup of water on Tuesday, but fortunately I was able to dry it out in a bag of rice. Friday was a full {but great} days! I took my friend Laurien to the airport bright dark & early, went to my last MOPS meeting, worked, and attended another graduation party. And we celebrated my friends Laura & Regan's birthdays tonight! Other than that, I went on a couple of bike rides. I really don't know when I rode my bike last, but it was good to be on it again!

This may be an admission of just how lame I am, but I still watch American Idol. {I usually record it so I can fast forward through the stupid stuff, if that makes my previous admission any better!} My favorite artist this season was Angie Miller, though I really liked Kree from the beginning as well. I grew to like Candace along the way, and I felt like any of the top three deserved to win. Maybe Angie & Kree will do better with a little more freedom from not having won? Anyways, I really like Angie's original song that she did during Hollywood week, and it was just released on iTunes yesterday! So how about that?! My favorite part is probably the chorus, but I haven't listened to the entire song enough to know if there's a different part that's better!

You come, You come with open arms
You say, "I love you for who you are"
When I was haunted and alone
With the baggage on my back, dragging me down
You set me free...

Alrighty, I'm off to bed! I hope y'all are having a wonderful weekend! ♥

"Running"

(by Kris Allen)

Running by Kris Allen on Grooveshark

As usual, it has taken me way too long to tell y'all about my super great weekend with my aunt, uncle, and cousins! I was waiting on some official pictures from the run. {I know I've said that type of thing before, but it's true every time. I promise!} They were going to be posted last Wednesday, but the person responsible for that has been dealing with some medical issues. Anyways, they're up, and I was able to get a couple of pictures that I didn't have. So without further ado...

I'm soooo glad that I signed up for Kirby's run, because it meant that I got to see my family! I think I've mentioned that they now live about 11 hours away, which is a little much for me to drive by myself. And it's also practically impossible for me to do in a day, like I did on occasion when they lived about half that distance (& that wasn't the best idea). So I hadn't seen my beautiful cousin Kendra & her family since her wedding in August. For the record, that's way too long!

Wow, y'all, this isn't looking good...I've rambled for two paragraphs of this post & haven't even arrived in Lubbock yet! Moving right along...

My uncle picked me up from the airport, and I was happy to discover that Kirby & Catherine were at my aunt & uncle's house when we got there! Jason & Kendra came out as well, and we all met up with Catherine's family for dinner at a delicious Italian restaurant {carb-loading before the race! ha ha!} After dinner, some of us went to a pie bar. Oh.my.goodness. We need one down here!

{This yummy bit of chocolatey goodness consists of Oreo crust, chocolate mousse, and a bit of Thin Mint crust & whipped cream on top! They had all sorts of crusts & pie fillings to choose from, though, if chocolate's not your thing...}

The next morning was the run, and somehow they had me in the wrong age group...

{it was resolved when it came time for results}

As we all lined up at the starting line, the race director addressed the crowd. He talked about the proceeds benefitting Kirby and asked my sweet cousin to raise his hand.

Then he had Kirby turn around and see all of the people who had come to support him. I'm not gonna lie, it brought tears to my eyes (& still does now). We were all at the run because Kirby was there, as in alive. And because he's amazing, Kirby placed 3rd overall!

I ran with my beautiful cousin Kendra, her husband Jason, and a couple of their friends. We ran for about a mile or so before there were complaints of pain, side cramps, etc. After a bit, someone said something along the lines of, "If you're waiting for someone to suggest that we walk, I could suggest that." And most everyone agreed that we'd walk for a bit. After one more run/walk rotation, Kendra, Jason, & I ran the last mile. In all, we probably walked 3/4 mile. I know, Brooke, I could've/should've run the whole thing!

And when we got the results, I really realized that I should've run the whole thing because I would've won my a/g. Instead, I was the 2nd female in my age group:

A lot of Kirby's family ended up placing, but some of the results weren't recorded correctly. For instance, Kendra placed in the under 19 a/g (though she's a little older than that).

Catherine was the first female, but I couldn't find a picture of her win. Here we all are with her family, though!

As for the rest of the weekend, we ate at several local places (which I love)! We spent Saturday evening with our friend Aaron's parents & sister. {He's doing well, by the way! He's currently learning to drive with hand controls!} And after church on Sunday, we met up with Catherine's family for lunch before everyone headed home. My return flights were fairly uneventful. The most "exciting" part was when I arrived at Love Field to catch my connecting flight to Houston. I had to walk from one end of the terminal to the other and almost didn't make it! The 2nd most exciting part was when the man next to me asked if I was going to school in Houston! ü

I'll close with one more picture of me with my favorite cousins:

"Little Balloon"

(by Jenny & Tyler) Little Balloon - Open Your Doors

Well, y'all, if you can believe this, I didn't have much to say yesterday. So I figured that I'd forego my usual Saturday post full of randomness & post a great video today instead...If you haven't seen any Kid President videos, you totally need to check him out! He's super cute & hilarious! Baby girl posted this on my wall the other day, so I thought I'd share it with y'all on Mother's Day! :)

And in case you wondered...I posted today's song because it's the one in the background of the video, and I realized that I've never posted it for y'all! :)

I hope y'all are having a wonderful weekend!! ♥

"In the Still of the Nite (I'll Remember)"

(by Boyz II Men)

In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember) by Boyz II Men on Grooveshark

There's a little medical issue with the person responsible for posting the race pics, so I'm going to hold off on posting about it. If the pics aren't up by next week, I'll just go on without them. OK? OK! For now, I thought I'd share another:

The ladies had a little Blast to the Past event {more on this later} at church last night, & it had me pulling out my prom pictures. I thought y'all might get a kick out of them, but y'all know me better than to think I'd post pics without a story to go along with them! :) So let's flashback 20 years, shall we?!...

It was my Senior year in high school, and I had been dating a boy since December. In a case of colossally bad timing, he broke up with me a week before the prom. :/ I was heartbroken, as you'd imagine. But it was made worse by the fact that I already had my dress & everything. I received an invitation to a friend's ball in New York, which was exciting(!) & gave me an opportunity to wear my dress. But I had actually looked forward to going to my prom! Within a few days, a friend from school heard about my situation and asked if I would like to go with him:

There was only one little issue...he had already told a couple of guys that he would drive them, and his mom insisted that he keep his commitment. So I ended up going to the prom with three guys!

Yes, I realize that the picture looks quite inappropriate, but the situation was way more innocent than it looks! I couldn't find another picture of me with all three of the boys, though. I could've sworn we took official pictures, but I can't find a single one. :/

I'd love to hear about your prom(s)! Do you have any fun/tragic/sweet stories to share? What was your theme &/or song? Do you have pictures as stylin' as mine? Were you able to get your bangs as high as mine?! ;) Please share in the comments, or post about it & let me know when you do! :)

"Redemption Song"

(by Bob Marley) Redemption Song - Uprising (Bonus Tracks)

Redemption Song by Bob Marley on Grooveshark

I'm pretty sure that most people have seen the following video. But with this being Melanoma Monday, I thought I'd post it anyways. Though it's mostly about skin melanoma, there's also an ocular melanoma representative...

If you're not in the melanoma world, then you are probably unaware of the controversy surrounding the color that we were encouraged to wear today. Long story short...melanoma's color is black, but the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) told everyone to wear orange. And the melanoma community is not one bit happy about it {see comments on the AAD facebook page for just a bit of the outrage!} I did a little research because I wasn't sure who sets the awareness dates, months, and colors. I didn't come to firm conclusion on all of it, but I discovered that I've been misinformed about the month of May. Though some sites state that May is Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness month (or simply Melanoma Awareness Month), a majority of the legitimate sites I came across (including the American Cancer Society) state that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. And according to the AAD, ACS, and many others, today is specifically Melanoma Monday (not the more broad term of skin cancer). It appears as if the AAD first designated the day, so it makes sense that they'd pick the color for today. But melanoma's color is black, not orange. I don't understand why an organization like the AAD would promote something that would cause division among the people who are most passionate about awareness and finding a cure. :/ I love that they want to raise awareness, though! And I think free skin screenings are super.

Anyways...I know that my regular readers are well aware of melanoma (and specifically ocular melanoma). But on the off chance that someone else comes across this little blog, I thought I'd provide a tiny bit of awareness today! Melanoma isn't "just skin cancer." It's a killer. And it isn't just on skin. It can be also be found in the mucous membranes and the eye. It's SO important to get educated, know what to look for, protect your skin, and get yearly dilated eye exams!!

Amy

P.S. No, today's song doesn't really relate. But Bob Marley died of melanoma, and the song mentions a pirate. Obviously, I need help with songs. I'm open to suggestions that relate to pretty much anything! ;)

"You Are"

(by Colton Dixon) You Are - A Messenger

I have basically dropped off the blogosphere lately, but I hope to get back in the groove soon. I have bits & pieces of the last few weeks that I haven't shared with y'all yet, so I'll try to remember what's worth mentioning. In no particular order, I...

...got to be a part of two different birthday lunches for my friend Amy! We met up with our hair stylist one day & our birthday girls another day! :)

...had dinner at Brian & Jana's one night (along with her parents, kids, & my family), and Clara told us upon arrival that we were having a surprise game party! Jana had received a free party pack from House Party & Mattel, and my family got to be a part of it! We played Whac-A-Mole and UNO Power Grab with some pretty cute kids! :)

...got to see my friend Nichole & meet her sweet new baby!! {Did I tell you she's moving back?! Today, actually!!}

...met up with my "little sis" from high school for lunch & coffee one day!

...am happy to say that Desiree hosted Moms In Prayer this week. And it was good. We didn't actually pray (for the first time ever), but it really was good.

...did a little thrift store shopping with Amy & Marcie! We have a tacky prom event coming up, so we went in search of the perfect dresses. We weren't entirely successful, but we had a good time. Well, aside from getting trapped in our parking spot by someone who parked where it was clearly stated that you shouldn't park, we had a good time! And we ate delicious pizza!

...went to a graduation party for one of my small group girls today! :)

...thought y'all might get a kick out of the name on my cup (based on a little fact {#6} I told y'all recently):

It's spelled differently but pronounced the same! And NO, I don't still tell people that's my name! I didn't write it. I was at a MOPS brunch, and one of the other ladies got tea & lemonade for Carrie & me. But she got our drinks mixed up, so we just switched them & drank out of the "wrong" cups for the morning!

...didn't really listen to today's song the most. I know, I know. I sound like a broken record, or [stealing a line from Natalie] "to be more current, a song stuck on repeat." I think I'm in need of some new tunes! And Colton Dixon has an album that I'd like to buy, so I thought I'd post one of his songs. ü

Alrighty, I guess I'm done for now. I hope y'all are having a great weekend! ♥

"Look Like Me"

(by The Killjoys)

Look Like Me by The Killjoys on Grooveshark

The lyrics of today's song don't really go at all. But the title sorta does, so we're gonna go with it...

While I await the posting of official race pics (so I can tell y'all about my super great trip), I thought I'd share a funny little story that occurred while I was out of town. I went to church with my aunt & uncle on Sunday, and I was standing with my aunt during the "meet & greet" part of the service. A lady came up and said (to Aunt Karla), "Oh, she looks just like you! This must be your daughter or sister!"

For the record, Aunt Karla is barely more than 50 years old. So she's not quite old enough to be my mom, nor does she look old enough to be my mom! I suppose we could be sisters, since we're about the same age difference as my baby brother & me, though. But what struck us both as funny is the fact that we're related by marriage, not blood. She's married to my mom's baby brother, whom I actually do resemble a little {& my brother resembles him even more than his own sons do!}

Since that little incident reminded me of a situation from 30+ years ago, I thought I'd turn today's post into a:

I had just turned seven years old when I was the flower girl in my Uncle Chris & Aunt Karla's wedding. I loved wearing a beautiful white dress & feeling like a princess, but what I remember most was that people said that I looked like my new aunt! Though it was probably just our similar hair & eye color that made people say that, I still thought it was pretty neat that people thought I looked anything like her! :)
