“Can't Stand My Retainer”

(by Cellophane) Cellophane - Hang Ups - Can't Stand My Retainer

While looking for old pictures of my brother & me the other day, I came across some pictures that documented a MISplacement that is totally worth sharing with y'all!

Back in my high school days, I spent a lot of time at my friend Amy's house {different Amy than the one I speak of often ~ but, yes, I always seem to have a friend or two with my name!} So much time, in fact, that her dad called me "Trey" ~ his slang for "tres" (as in "3rd daughter").

Though I didn't eat much during those days, I definitely ate at their house! Amy's mom cooked wonderful homemade meals every night, and it was nice to hang out in a family environment, complete with a little sister and brother (that we dressed up in units outfits ~ but that's a whole other story...)

After dinner one evening, I went to the counter where I had placed my napkin-wrapped retainer, and it wasn't there! Why I didn't carry my retainer case in my purse, I don't know; but I never had it with me, so I always wrapped my retainer in a napkin. We asked Amy's mom if she had seen it, and she surmised that she must have swept it into the trash can as she wiped off the counter. Of course, the trash bag had already been taken to the garage & placed with several other trash bags!

As you can imagine, it took quite a bit of time to search through them! Fortunately, Amy, Allison & Clay assisted me! I have no idea how many dirty, wadded up napkins where in there, but we had to gently unfold them all to see if they contained my retainer! Eventually, we found it! And Amy's mom insisted that I just set my retainer in plain sight on the counter in the future!

Before you scroll down to view the pictures, please let me explain that I grew up in & near Houston ~ one of the most humid cities on earth! Also, I have no idea why I had a sticker on my arm. Or my leg. Yes, we had been shucking corn earlier. I don't have a clue why a friend of mine would be wearing a Cowboys shirt, when the Oilers were right down the road. Yes, we put clothespins on our noses. & NO, I have NO idea what I was wearing or why the fashion police hadn't arrested me already!

So...have you ever dug through the trash for anything?

"I Fell For You"

(by Amy Stroup) Amy Stroup - The Other Side of Love- Session One - I Fell for You

Yes, I know, the title of this song sounds like I should save it for my MIS-series, doesn't it?! :) If you didn't listen to the song, you really should! I just love her sound! {I know, I've said that already!} At the beginning of the week, I was sure there'd be a Superchick song on here today. Their new CD came out on Tuesday, and I pre-bought it through their website. I actually thought I'd get it Tuesday or maybe Wednesday, but I'm still waiting...Looking at their boards, other people got it on Tuesday. So, mine is apparently taking a little trip around the country before it comes here to stay! Oh well, I'll get it eventually...

OK, sorry for the little rant! I'm done with that! I actually don't have much time to write. I'm about to go with my dad to see my baby brother. It's several hours away, and we'll be gone all day. I thought I'd be ambitious & get this done first thing in the morning! Yay!

This week, I spent a day with my "little sis" from my high school days! We were super sophisticated ~> meeting for coffee then having sushi for lunch! We sat there wondering when we grew up!! ;) It was great! I spent another day helping my good friend Amy perform RAKs ~ more on that later! The teachers at my kids' school treated all of the volunteers to a luncheon one day ~ which I think is super nice! The PTO President sent me this picture with the ladies at my table:

That's about it! I hope you have a super great weekend!!

(by Toad the Wet Sprocket) Toad the Wet Sprocket - In Light Syrup - Brother

Today is my older brother Kerry's birthday!! I'm pretty sure he doesn't even know that I have a blog, much less that I would post about his birthday! But, I love him, and he deserves a post ~ whether he knows about it or not! He really is an awesome guy, and I'm so glad to have him as my brother. He's 15 months older than me & my only full sibling. He taught me all the rules; & though I liked to test them growing up, he never did! He really is (& has always been) such a good person. The two years that we were in middle school together, we had the occasional difference of opinion ~ but honestly, we have always gotten along very well! During college, we wrote letters back & forth that I still have today. For the first five or six years that Chris & I were married, Kerry would stay with us once a month when he was in Dallas for his Air National Guard drill weekend. It was so good to see him so often, and I missed those times once he completed his service. He married a wonderful girl named Wendy over 14 years ago, and she is like a sister to me. They have three really great kids that are close in age to my kids (you may remember them from this post).

Here are a few pictures of Kerry & me through the years! :)

I've gotten lazy about posting song lyrics. {Most of you don't really read them anyways, plus they don't always go with what I'm trying to say!} I like all of what this song has to say, but the following lines mean the most to me, in regards to my brother:

So much has changed
So much has happened these years
I still find that you're waiting here
We have a bond that nothing can change
And still I find a peace of mind
Whenever I hear your name

Happy Birthday, Kerry! {& Happy Earth Day, too!!}

"Climbing Trees"

(by David Gamboa)

I've had a really good week, & I hope you have, too! I had lunch with my friend Jess one day. Another day, I did a little weeding in the butterfly garden at my kids' school, which inspired me to do some work in my own yard! I had to replace a couple of plants that didn't survive the freeze in December. I thought I had lost 8 plants, but 5 came back! I found this little decoration (for super cheap at Kirkland's) to use in place of one of them:

& I got the Butterfly Bush in the corner to replace the poor Mexican Firebush that froze to death!

If you read my last post, then you know our happy tax news! We're also doing some celebrating this weekend in the form of showers & birthdays. Cody had two birthday parties to attend. Last night, I thoroughly enjoyed celebrating my good friend Amy's birthday {she may be taking over my blog one day this week...stay tuned!}

Today, I went to Amanda's baby shower & got to catch up with some girls I haven't seen in a long time. Lastly, my baby girl & I are driving up to Dallas tomorrow for Kristin's bridal shower {her dad was the hero I wrote about here ~ did I mention that my babies are going to be in her wedding?! I'm so excited!} We plan to celebrate Elly's 1/2 birthday by going to Braum's while we're in that part of the state!

I found some great bargains this week, too! I have this strange issue with a lot of my t-shirts: small holes where they rub against my jeans. Check this out:

Weird. Has anybody else had this problem before? Fortunately, we had a little money in our clothing budget, so I hopped over to Plato's Closet & picked up 4 shirts for $20. Then, I took advantage of Old Navy's "Stuff & Save" event (50% off everything I could fit in their free reusable bag, including sale items!) & managed to get some crazy steals!! Now, these deals aren't quite as good as a resale shop; but for brand new items, I think I did pretty good! I won't bore you with all of the details, but the best deals were:
  • Jeans for Cody (regularly $19.50): $6.25
  • Jeans for my mister (regularly $29.50): $10
  • Two-piece tankini for me (regularly $40): $18
  • Cute camo bag for Amos (not sure of it's regular price): $2.5
One final bit of happiness...

WARNING: this is completely random...

I was doing the dishes the other day & saw this heart-shaped water droplet on the floor:

{Does that just make you happy?!}

Regarding the song~> I'm not real sure why I haven't posted any from David Gamboa's latest album until today, but here you go! I love the idea behind this song. If Jesus were walking by, & you couldn't see him for crowd of tall people, would you be like a child & climb a tree to see him?

(by Barlow Girl) BarlowGirl - Another Journal Entry - Enough

All of You is more than enough for all of me
For every thirst and every need
You satisfy me with Your love
And all I have in You is more than enough

You are my supply
My breath of life
Still more awesome than I know
You are my reward
Worth living for
Still more awesome than I know

You’re my sacrifice
Of greatest price
Still more awesome than I know
You’re my coming King
You're everything
Still more awesome than I know

God is so good! I don't know if you remember tax day last year, but it was not a happy day for me. Actually, I was in a funk for about two weeks because of how much we had to pay. This year, things are much better! We owe 90% less than last year, so that's a HUGE difference! And the most exciting thing about it is the fact that God has provided enough money for us to pay on time & without penalties!! This is the first time in several years that we have not only been able to file without an extension, but we ALL that we need without putting any of it on a credit card!

God blessed us through a friend about a month ago, and we held onto the money in case we owed good ol' Uncle Sam. Unfortunately, we ended up having to pay a little over half of it towards van repairs. I was a little discouraged at that time, because I figured we would need more money for taxes. Then, we found out that we owed less than I estimated! Also, extra money came in from Chris playing the bass. And if you can believe this, we were able to pay our taxes without even touching our emergency fund!

Please don't take this post as me bragging about our financial state. Believe me, there is absolutely nothing to brag about. We still have debt that we acquired while Chris was starting his business, and I am not one bit proud of that. We have been on a path to financial freedom for the past 4 years or so, and it hasn't been easy. I just wanted to take a little time to boast about the goodness of the Lord!

"Baby Love"

(by Diana Ross & The Supremes) The Supremes - Diana Ross & The Supremes: Anthology - Baby Love

I haven't shared a MIShap or anything lately, so here's a MISspeak for ya...

I ran into a friend at a restaurant one day. She was dining with some family members that I hadn't met before. She began the introductions with her sister, then said, "And this is her husband." As I looked toward him, I couldn't stop myself from saying, "He's so cute!!"

I immediately realized how that sounded & tried to explain myself while they laughed! See, the moment I looked over at the sister's husband, he picked up the most adorable baby boy & held him up directly in my line of sight ~ &, for the record: completely blocking himself from my view! The baby boy was to whom I was referring when I expressed my thoughts about his cuteness!

Alright, fess up: have you ever accidentally said that somebody else's husband was cute?!

"Today Was a Fairytale"

(by Taylor Swift) Taylor Swift - Valentine's Day (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Today Was a Fairytale

I'm sorry to disappoint the 5 of you who were anxiously awaiting my Saturday post! I ended up with a house full of people until pretty late. Then, I still had to make a cake for church today. I was completely exhausted after that, so I figured y'all would forgive me for going to bed without posting!

This was an pretty busy week, but I forgot to take pictures of it all! While our a/c wasn't working, it was actually nicer outside in the evenings than it was inside. So, we ate dinner on the patio Monday night!

We finally got together with our good friends Dan & Amanda on Thursday night! Dan was the drummer in the band that Chris played bass in (when we moved to Houston). We used to see them at least once a week, but life got crazy! Amanda is about 8 months pregnant, & I hadn't seen her belly in real life yet! We had a great time with them, eating at our favorite empanada place & hanging out at our house until way past bedtime! But, it was so great to see them again!

Yesterday, a bunch of my extended family came over! My aunt, a couple of cousins & their spouses came in from New Mexico & the panhandle of Texas, as well as my dad, brother & his family from across town. If you can believe this, I was able to feed 15 people for about $15! I made my homemade spaghetti sauce (using canned tomatoes that I got for super cheap ~ thanks to coupons & great deals at Kroger!), salad, homemade biscuits (that taste like Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Biscuits) & super yummy banana pudding (both regular & sugar-free for my dad, who is diabetic). Unfortunately, I forgot to get the camera out while the family was here, but how scrumptious does this look?!

I finally got around to touching up some of the paint in Cody's room this week! I feel terrible that I haven't finished it yet, but it's quite the daunting task. The mistakes on the edges are way more obvious in his room than Elizabeth's (with all the white paint). It is SO discouraging to try fixing it only to mess it up worse! So, I just kept putting it off until this week. Though it isn't completely touched up, it's done enough to post a couple of pictures!

I almost forgot to reveal the truth from my last post! I know nobody will believe this, but it's actually #1! It was a teen night club, but you had to be 14 to get in. It was Spring Break, & I went to Galveston with a friend who loved to dance. I didn't have the first clue how to dance, so I just watched her & tried to mimic what she did! I'm sure I looked like a fool! As for #2, I never babysat them, though I did know their dad & talk to their mom a couple of times. They could've been at my wedding, but they were on a family vacation instead! :/ I totally wish the 3rd & 4th were true, I grew up with a guy with the 5th (& secretly wished I had a cool birthday like that, too!), & the 6th was almost true (but there isn't actually construction right behind me)!

As for the song, I just really like Taylor Swift! There's nothing in particular about this one today. I hope y'all had a wonderful weekend!

"How Could You Say No"

(by Julie Miller) Julie Miller - Meet Julie Miller - How Could You Say No

"Thorns on His head, spear in His side
Yet it was a heartache that made Him cry
He gave His life so you would understand
Is there any way you could say no to this man?

If Christ Himself were standing here
Face full of glory and eyes full of tears
And He held out His arms and His nail printed hands
Is there any way you could say no to this man?

How could you look in His tear stained eyes
Knowing it's you He's thinking of?
Could you tell Him you're not ready to give Him your life?
Could you say you don't think you need His love?

Jesus is here with His arms open wide
You can see Him with your heart
If you'll stop looking with your eyes
He's left it up to you, He's done all that He can
Is there any way you could say no to this man?

How could you look in His tear stained eyes
Knowing it's you He's thinking of?
Could you tell Him you're not ready to give Him your life?
Could you say you don't think you need His love?

Thorns on His head, your life in His hands
Is there any way you could say no to this man?
Is there any way you could say no to this man?"

I was going to post this song on Friday, but I think it's still good for today! Though it is more about Christ's crucifixion & not His resurrection, the words are super for any day! In case you were hoping for a resurrection song, I've added a bonus old school Don Francisco song that I grew up listening to my daddy sing. Can you imagine being one of Jesus' disciples (Peter, in this case) on that day?! After witnessing such a horrible death, what joy would fill your heart to find that your Savior was alive!!

(by Selena Gomez & The Scene) Selena Gomez & The Scene - Kiss & Tell - Naturally

As I mentioned yesterday, I haven't listened to my iPod much this week ~ but, Elly & I heard today's song at least 4x in less than 24 hours on Radio Disney. Add that to the numerous times that the video was on the Disney Channel this week & the constant replay in my head, & it is definitely the song I've listened to the most this week!

We have some good news regarding Christopher's vision! Though the blood was removed as a result of the vitrectomy in January, there had been no improvement in his visual acuity. We weren't sure that Chris would ever regain vision in his affected eye. As his last hope, he received a steroid injection about a month ago. It didn't seem to be working, but we found out differently at his doctor visit on Thursday. They used the pinhole mask & found that his acuity has actually improved to 20/100. He hasn't noticed an improvement, but the fact that it actually has improved (however intermittent) is encouraging.

I've had quite the productive week, considering the fact that I completed both of my projects around the house! If you haven't seen it already, check out my last post for a picture of the patio table. & below is my framed necklace holder ~ or whatever you call it! I spent between $1-$3 on each knob, less than $3 on the fabric, & I already had the frame. So, the whole thing was about $10!

Well, I better get to bed, because I feel quite hot & grouchy. Our A/C isn't working properly {& seeing as it was only 80 degrees outside today, it's not considered an emergency ~ so I don't dare call that number! I'll just wait until Monday to have the builder send somebody out to look things over.} It feels better now that the sun has gone down, but it was so stinking hot earlier today when our friends Rob & Misty were here. So, of course, we had to have ice cream to make things more tolerable! If you can believe this, I'm going to bed without a nice hot bath {because tonight that doesn't sound so nice!} I'm praying for a cool night & that I can endure the blow dryer in the morning (I'm totally moving the oscillating fan to the bathroom when it's time for that)!

"The Best Day"

(by Taylor Swift) Taylor Swift - Fearless - The Best Day

I had the BEST day with my girl today! I know that this song is actually from a somewhat grown daughter's point of view ~ but since this is my blog, I'll pretend that she wanted me to post this today! ;)

We went into Houston for hair cuts...How cute is she?!

& because I'm a good sport, here's a picture of me after a day in the wind & humidity:

Afterward, Elly spotted Quizno's, so we decided to have lunch there. We both got kids' meals & split the sides (that way, neither of us had to choose between chips & the cookie!) Since we were in the area, we went to Anthropologie (thank you, Hannah!) to look for knobs for one of the projects I mentioned in my last post. I found a couple, but you'll have to wait 'til I finish for pictures! I will show you the mug I've been coveting, though! It's out of stock online, so I figured I should pick it up at the shop before it's gone!

Don't you just love it?! Think how happy you would be to get to the bottom of your cup of tea/coffee & see this:

We also went to a couple of antique stores to look for a cool frame (for the aforementioned project). I actually have a frame from something else that will do, but I was hoping to find something better. My problem is that I want something garage sale cheap, & that isn't happening where I've been looking. So we tried Good Will & found a decent one, but it was more than I wanted to spend there. We did see Larry Micheaux (a former Houston Cougars basketball player who played during the "Phi Slamma Jama" era along with Hakeem Olajuwon & Clyde Drexler), and Elly got a book!

It was so nice to walk past all the shops, arm & arm with my girl. She was so cute as we would cross the street, grabbing my hand & giggling as she hollered, "Hurry!" Since she pleasantly endured all the stops I wanted to make, I honored her request to go to Half Price Books. She was able to find one of the two books she was looking for. Then, we ran down to Urban Outfitters & picked up some Mary Janes that I've also been coveting for awhile (2 for $20)! I know that it's flip flop season ~ but I haven't painted my nails yet, so I'll be sporting these until I get around to that!

{If you can believe this, we actually walked right past The Chocolate Bar & didn't go in!}

While we were out, I also found a cute planter to use on the centerpiece of the patio table I mentioned in my last post! I had planned on only repainting the set, but I ended up recovering the seats, too. Once I finished with the fresh coat of paint, I wanted the whole thing to look brand new! So, I found some fabric on sale & recovered them last night!

Of course, we listened to Radio Disney all the way! We laughed about how often we heard certain songs! (You may end up seeing one of them tomorrow, since I haven't listened to my iPod much). It was such a fun day of talking, giggling, singing & shopping! My only regret is not hiring a photographer to follow us around! How sweet would it be to have some shots of us window shopping hand in hand?!
