"Bandages"

(by Hot Hot Heat) Bandages - Make Up the Breakdown

Bandages by Hot Hot Heat on Grooveshark

With all this excitement regarding my baby brother lately, I was reminded of a little story from 20+ years ago. So I thought I'd make him the focus of this edition of:

For a little background information...most of my life, I had wanted to be a big sister. When my dad married Lorna, Ivar was already four. That was certainly better than nothing, but what I really wanted was a baby sibling. Sadly, my step-mom miscarried when I was in 5th grade. I was so sad about the baby passing away that I cried myself to sleep many nights. After that, I thought I would never have a baby brother or sister. Then to my delight, they got pregnant again a few years later! Aaron was born when I was 13 years old, and he was my baby.

As I explained on his birthday a few years ago, I took care of him when he was little (because I wanted to, not because I had to). I would carry him around wherever I went. I'm not sure if Dad & Lorna liked the fact that I did this, or if they thought I was spoiling him & would have to undo the damage I had done every other weekend! Either way, they let me tend to him, and I loved it!

One thing that I did from the time he was born was sit him in a little seat in the bathroom with me while I would put my makeup on & fix my hair. {Again, not sure how his parents felt about this...! I just wanted to be with him every second possible. Is that weird?!} One day when he was a toddler, I was in the living room when I heard him cry out in pain from the bathroom. He had burned his little fingers on my curling iron.

Obviously, I felt horrible about leaving it where he could reach it. He had no idea it was hot & was probably just trying to copy me. I doctored him up & soothed him as best as I could. A little while later, I followed him to the bathroom where he reprimanded the curling iron quite sternly! He pointed his little finger at it & (in his adorable little toddler voice) said, "No! No! Hot! Bad!" How cute is that?! ;)

P.S. I picked today's song for a couple of reasons, & just wanted to point out how creative I was with the choosing. Hot Hot Heat + "Bandages"...see how I did that?! ;)

"When I'm 64"

(by The Beatles) When I'm Sixty-Four - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

My dad is 64 years old today! He may not like the fact that I put his age on here, but how else would I explain the song?!

Happy birthday to the first man I ever loved! ♥

"Perfect Day"

(by Lou Reed) Perfect Day - Transformer

Perfect Day by Lou Reed on Grooveshark

MY BABY BROTHER IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!

Aaron's mentor picked him up yesterday morning, took him to take care of some business, then dropped him off at my dad's house. He is free! He can go to the kitchen & drink some milk, get on Facebook, watch TV, and drink good coffee any time he wants. And so much more.

There are so many little things that we take for granted, huh?

Kerry met us at Dad's for burgers last night. Christina had prepared them the way Aaron has been talking about for awhile now (with bell peppers & onions in the patties), and she & Dad got him a cake!

Before we left Dad's last night, and he said it's like he woke up from this terrible nightmare in an unfamiliar house with the people he loves. And it feels good. ♥

P.S. Aaron picked out today's song! :)

"Farther Along"

(by Josh Garrels) Farther Along - Love & War & The Sea In Between

This week has been super great, due in part to the fact that I got to sleep in four days in a row! Not that I slept very late on those days, but even an hour later than usual is super! Baby girl & I went to the mall on Wednesday, we spent the day at Kerry & Wendy's on Thursday, and we put up our Christmas decorations on Friday! We usually watch Elf after decorating, but I had met a friend from high school for lunch {Hi, Amy! You can subscribe by email now ~> see the "Follow by Email" thingy above the blog archive!} & had friends over for dinner as well. So we didn't have time yesterday & are watching it tonight instead! :) Some of my favorite movie quotes ever are from Elf! They're probably predictable, but I'll save them for a special day anyways.

There was a knock on the door after 9:00 on Wednesday night. Seeing as that doesn't happen unless we're expecting someone, I figured it was Kristi. I had just left her house after borrowing a few tablespoons of lemon juice {which somehow took nearly an hour to do...ftr, I wasn't the only one talking!} & thought that she had forgotten to tell me something. It turned out to be a different neighbor, and he was bearing a delicious thank you gift for me! I hadn't done much {simply turned off his grill when he was away from home, which he said, "saved his house from burning down"!} but he thought it was a big enough deal to buy me a Goode Co. BBQ Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie!

In case you didn't see the spider update & care to know its resolution...Elly updated the post to tell how things went down in the end! She forgot to mention the key words it was BIG!! But I promise she agrees with me that it was not an itsy bitsy spider! Also {because she's the best} before I made it back to the van, she had thoroughly cleaned my water bottle to remove all evidence. I'm not a big fan of spider guts on my water bottle, so I thought that was a nice gesture!

Guess what?!...today I visited my baby brother for THE LAST TIME at this place!!!!

There aren't enough words to express how happy I am about that fact!!

So, funny story...any time I'm making something yummy, the kids ask if it's for MOPS. It started because that really did seem to be the case (to Cody, anyways). But it has evolved into a running joke. So the other night, I was telling the kids that I had friends coming over two Friday nights in a row and would need them to figure out something they could do. Cody suggested that they go see a movie last night, but I said they should hold off on that. I explained that they could be home last night, but I needed them gone next Friday night. He proceeded to ask who was coming over, and I told him that Laurien, Julie, & Nicole were coming last night, and my MOPS table was coming next week. He {quite dramatically} said, "Has it really come to this?! You're kicking us out of the house for MOPS?!" And he & Elly proceeded to have a long conversation about living on the streets, having to learn how to make fires, and eating rat brains. {Can you tell he's been watching Man vs. Wild?} Elly said she'd just eat at soup kitchens and stay at Kiya's house, taking Pepper with her...which sparked a discussion on whether Pepper would be happier on the streets or at Kiya's house...Does this type of conversation happen at everyone's house, or is my family a bit odd?

And sad story...I lost my knitting bag. I seriously have no idea where it could be. Chris & I went to the Kafe today to see if I left it there a couple of weeks ago, but apparently I didn't. The only other place I've taken it is the church. On Fridays, when I sit at Kathy's desk (to answer the phones & greet anyone who comes in the door), I bring my knitting stuff in case I run out of work to do. But Kathy doesn't remember seeing it. And that makes me sad... :(

So I realized that we finally got something for above the mantel (several months ago), but I never showed y'all! I mentioned a looooong time ago that Christopher had planned on making something to put inside the niche, and over a year ago it still hadn't happened. He doesn't really have time to make something right now, so I convinced him to let me get something for now. It didn't really take much to convince him, because I bothered him so much about making something that I'm pretty sure he was tired of hearing about it. If he wants to make something later, I'm totally fine with that. But for now, I'm glad to not have an empty spot! It was impossible to find something to fit inside the niche that I liked, so we decided to hide it:

I've posted today's song before, but it really is so great that I had to post it again! If you haven't listened to it, you really should! I know I say that a lot, but I'm serious business. Don't just listen to the tune, really listen to it. You may even want to look up the lyrics, because there's some really good stuff that he says rather quickly. The song has been done by lots of people over the past 100 years or so (Johnny Cash, Elvis, & Brad Paisley, among others), but I like this arrangement the best. There are so many beautiful lyrics that make you want to cry out of both sadness and joy. From sadness because of the reality of life, and out of the sheer joy that God gives us in the here and now and especially for what is to come! Of course I love the "Cheer up, my brothers. Live in the sunshine" part! :) And I smile when I hear, "And one day when the sky rolls back on us..." But I think my favorite part (right now) is:

So much more to life than we've been told
It's full of beauty that will unfold
And shine like you struck gold my wayward son
The deadweight burden weighs a ton
Go down to the river and let it run
Wash away all the things you've done
Forgiveness alright

And there's also a part about what "keeps me ramblin' on" that makes me think of myself & what I do on this here blog (and in real life). So I guess I'll let y'all go! I hope y'all are having a wonderful weekend!! ♥

"Thankful"

(by Aaron Logan) Thankful - Freedom Calls

I thought today's video was a great one to post on Thanksgiving for several reasons...First of all, the title is super for today! Secondly, it's our friend Aaron's song, and I like posting songs by people that I know.

But more importantly, this video gives you a picture of our sweet friend, his beautiful heart, and his gratitude to God. And you can also see some of the progress he has made since I told y'all about him this summer. This video was filmed on Sunday, which was the first time he has sung publicly since his accident at the end of June. He has a ways to go & could still use your prayers. But he has come a long way, which is definitely something he & his family (& friends) are thankful for today!

I'll be heading out to my brother's house in just a little bit. I've made some mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, my mom's pie {it has a name, but it's her recipe so that's how we refer to it!} & 7UP biscuits, and I'm looking forward to all of the yummy goodness made by Wendy & her mom! We tend to have fairly drama-free family gatherings these days, so I'm planning on having a great day! I hope y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! ♥

"Little Miss Muffet"

(by The Countdown Kids) Little Miss Muffet - 30 Toddler Songs (for ages 2+)

Little Miss Muffet by The Countdown Kids on Grooveshark

It has been quite awhile since I've posted something in my:

I'm not real sure whether this story fits in that category or not, but I'm telling it to y'all anyways...

I was sitting at a red light after leaving work this afternoon when I realized that my A/C wasn't working. Since it's the time of year when I'm constantly switching from A/C to heat, I made sure all of Silvie's settings were right. After realizing that they were correct, I decided that I should roll down the windows a little.

Just as I got the green arrow, I saw a spider crawl inside my van along the window frame right by my head.

I had to go, because someone {Wade, actually} was behind me. But I could see the spider in my peripheral, and he seemed to be getting closer & closer to me. I took a better look at him & noticed a red dot on his back, so I decided to pull over & try to kill him.

I opened the door & jumped out of the van, but I couldn't find him! Wade {being the good friend/boss that he is} stopped to see if I needed any help, and I explained what was going on. He got out to help me look, but he couldn't find the spider either. I told him about the red dot, and he asked how big the spider was & the shape of the red spot. {It was more of a dot, not an hourglass. In case you care...}

We both noticed a new silky thread descending from the ceiling and into the shadow beneath my seat. We watched as a teeny tiny spider landed on the floorboard. I laughed & said, "I promise that's not it! It was way bigger than that. And fuzzy!"

He seemed to believe me, because he kept looking in Sylvie's front seat & underneath. He pointed under my brake pedal & said, "You lost your phone there. Was that during the spider freak out?" :D

Sadly, we couldn't find the blasted thing. But I made it home alive! And upon further investigation, I think it was a Jumping Spider. Apparently my life was not in danger! ;)

UPDATE FROM ELLY {about 24 hours later}:
Mom went into Target and I was waiting in the car. I was singing along with the songs from my mom's iPod when suddenly...the spider appeared on the A/C controls right next to me. I watched it crawl around and was trying to figure out if I should bring my foot up and stomp it or what. I looked around then saw Mom's metal water bottle. I grabbed the lid and screwed it on so it wouldn't spill then strategically found when to strike. I hit it and it fell into to the cup holder so I watched it a little longer. I looked down and realized my stuff was on the floor where it was heading. I picked my stuff up and waited for the spider to crawl into a better position. I hit it and it fell to the floor where my stuff had been. Then I went ape on it and kept smashing and smashing with the water bottle. When I knew it was dead I called Mom and told her. She said she was almost to the car and wanted to see. I showed her it was squished on the floor in tiny pieces and she said,"Aww! I wanted to take a picture of it and show Wade!"

Amy

P.S. Silvie's A/C started working, but only on full blast. Which I pretty much never need, because I'm usually cold. :/

"One Thing Remains"

(by Jesus Culture) One Thing Remains - Come Away

One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture on Grooveshark

I'm still in a bit of transition when it comes to my tunes, so I really don't know what I've listened to the most. There are several good versions of today's song, but I haven't posted any Jesus Culture stuff in awhile. And since it's a Bethel Music song, I figured this was the best one to post! Once again, I don't really have a favorite part of the song because I love the whole thing! If you don't know the song, you should listen to it. Repeatedly. ;)

And now for my week...

First of all...my brother got a date!! He'll be released on Monday, the 26th! He won't be out by Thanksgiving, but he will be out by my dad's birthday {on the 28th}!! It'll be so great for him to start the next chapter of his life.

One of our former students (from our youth ministry days in Dallas) came to town on Thursday!! Kristin is one of my favorite girls! {Y'all may remember her dad (our hero) & when my babies were in her wedding!} I spent the evening with her at The Chocolate Bar! :) It was soooo good to see her! :)

Last night, our family had dinner at the home of an older couple from church. Before we ate, we sang a song together! {ü} After dinner, we enjoyed our dessert with Turkish tea (which they fell in love with during their time as missionaries in Turkey), played Spoons, had a brief time of prayer, and sang another hymn! Funny little story to show a bit of my boy's humor...we were discussing names, and Norm said that the reason he knew he had a middle name was because he was in trouble so much as a child, and his mom would use his full name. We went on to talk about nicknames & stuff. A little while later, he asked what Cody's middle name was. To which Cody responded, "I don't know." We all looked at him with confusion, and he looked at us with the cutest smirk. Y'all may have already figured it out, but I'm a little slower. He responded that way because he's never in trouble, so he doesn't know his middle name! ;)

This is such a full {& fun} weekend! We had dinner with the elders & their wives tonight. It was nice to get to know a couple of the ladies who I hadn't spent much time with before. Tomorrow we're having lunch with my dad & his girlfriend {!} after church! Today, Laura & I went in to Houston for a little visit to the Texas Junk Co. I plan to tell y'all more about our day when I have a chance {or I'll reference Laura's post if she beats me to it!} but I had to show y'all the boots that I found!

Last week, I mentioned that I had deleted some pictures from my computer. While sorting through pictures to see what I've printed and what I can get from Picasa & Facebook, I came across a picture from Venture that made me laugh. I didn't post it back then; but in light of my new work situation, I thought I'd share it with y'all now. These are the two guys that I work for! :)

Alrighty, I'm off to bed! I hope y'all are having a wonderful weekend! ♥

"The Altar"

(by Tricia Brock) The Altar - The Road (Deluxe Edition)

{This is the only way I could find for y'all to hear today's song. It's a teaching video, but if you start at about the 5:10 mark, you can hear Tricia sing most of the song...}

The women of my church got together for Overflow last night. Overflow is our monthly gathering for teaching & worship. {I told y'all a little bit about one of them awhile back!} We've been learning about spiritual disciplines this semester. For the record: we aren't learning about them so we can follow a bunch of rules to feel better about ourselves &/or earn God's favor. We are learning them so that we can put ourselves in a place of allowing God to transform us into His image. And like the apostle Paul encouraged the Philippians, we are putting into practice all that we've learned & seen from him (Phil. 4:9) as he imitated Christ (1 Cor. 11:1).

Anyways, we learned about the spiritual disciplines of silence & solitude last night. If I can be completely honest, I'm not so good at either of them. I talk a lot, and I find myself filling awkward silences {with what is most likely considered awkward ramblings!} And for the solitude part...I really like to be around people, and I tend to keep myself pretty busy. Every few months or so, I have to remind myself to be still.

I feel like I've made progress in these areas over the last year or so, without even thinking of them as spiritual disciplines. I don't know how many times I've talked to y'all about how much I enjoy my patio "sanctuary"! ;) I honestly love having alone time with Jesus out there. But I still have a ways to go. I haven't done very well this school year at all. I've spent more of my alone time preparing for Bible study & taking care of things around the house. While neither of those things are bad, they aren't as good as simply hanging out with God.

Last night was a good reminder to take advantage of those quiet moments when I'm alone and to make the most of those moments by resting in the Lord.

What are ways that you seek the Lord in silence & solitude?

"Oh, that we might know the Lord!
Let us press on to know Him.
He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn

or the coming of rains in early spring."
(Hosea 6:3)

"Nothing Else I Need"

(by Jeremy Camp) Nothing Else I Need - Restored

Nothing Else I Need by Jeremy Camp on Grooveshark

I've already told y'all about the most exciting part of my week!! But I actually did a few fun things...Our MOPS group had a Moms Night Out where we enjoyed yummy cheese & chocolate at The Melting Pot! And last night, a group of us celebrated Amanda's 30th birthday! We ate dinner at Taste of Texas, then ate brownies & played charades at an antique art bar. ü The brownies had peanut butter cups in them! {Yum!}

We had a thing at the church this morning where we learned about upcoming mission opportunities. At work this week, I had proofed some stuff that I printed for this morning. Apparently I should've checked some facts as well, because there were some errors. And I printed 75 copies (4 pages each, & all but one of those pages were front & back). Ya. Just keeping it real...

So my computer has some issues, and Chris has been trying to fix it for me. In the process, he set up a new profile & had me sort through my old one and only keep the stuff I need. And because my talents extend beyond bumping into things & burning myself, I accidentally deleted some pictures that I haven't printed yet :/ {Jana, you're rubbing off on me!} He also set things up to where my music is stored on the cloud instead of the computer, and I can access it through Google Play & the Melodies app. Though I don't like change so much, I think this will help my computer run faster. Plus I've been listening to songs that I haven't heard in awhile, because I don't have any of my old playlists. For example, I rediscovered today's song because I've had all of my songs on shuffle. I had completely forgotten about this song! It says lots of good stuff, but the following words are my prayer:

I will lay down all my needs
& You will come and make them new
To make You my only desire

And because blog posts are better with pictures, I thought I'd show y'all a picture of Pepper in the entertainment center...

My crazy puppy has found a new place to take naps, and it makes me laugh! Recently, she started whining at that cabinet door. Her toys are stored in there, but she hadn't asked for them in a long time. I don't know if she somehow remembered, or if she walked by & smelled them. Either way, we got them out for her to play with. And for about a day, she seemed happy with them. Then she started whining at the door again, and we couldn't figure out why (because her toys were all over the floor for her to play with)! After the door was opened for her, she climbed in & lay down on the blanket in there. And she has done it several times now. She's such a weirdo!

Alrighty, I'm going to make some dinner now. I hope y'all are having a super great weekend!! ♥

"The Reckoning"

(by NEEDTOBREATHE) The Reckoning - The Reckoning

Yes, I realize that the video is about the album, & the song is in the background. And there's a lot of talking. But I never posted it when the album came out last year, and it's the title of their current tour. So I thought it would work for today...

I had such a great time in College Station for the NTB concert the other night! My friend Elena had picked up a ticket for me, and I had planned on driving alone & meeting up with her. A couple of weeks beforehand, though, Sloan bought a ticket so she could ride with me! Road trips are way more fun with a friend! We met up with Elena (on the right) & her roommate Joy (on the left):

We grabbed some dinner & got to the arena right after Matthew Mayfield's performance. I hadn't realized that he was on tour with them, so we didn't rush to get there right when the doors opened or anything. I got to meet him, though, so that was cool...

I had never heard of Good Old War, the band who opened up for NTB. I liked their harmonies, but I think the drummer had a much better voice than the lead singer! Anyways, we had amazing seats: sixth row, right in the middle! And Elena (who is quite tall) offered to switch places with me, because she's super. The guy in front of me was tall & the girl in front of her was short, so it worked out quite well! ;)

As you'd expect, the concert was awesome! Here are a few of my favorite pictures from it:

The only bad thing was the fact that they didn't do "Valley of Tomorrow" this time. But they did a Johnny Cash song & one that I've never heard before, so those songs made up for it (sorta)!

If you'd like to see even more pictures from that night, feel free to watch the slideshow below!

You should totally see NEEDTOBREATHE in concert if you ever get a chance! They really do a great job. What's the best concert you've ever been to?

(by Needtobreathe)

Because I'm going to their concert tonight, I thought I'd post a little NTB for ya. Yes, I know I've posted this song a couple of times...but never like this!

Please don't hate me if you have a hard time getting the images out of your mind! ;)

"Hesitate"

(by Steve Moakler) Hesitate - October Baby Motion Picture Soundtrack

I'm loving this song right now! It's on the October Baby soundtrack, along with some other super great songs. {& you should totally see the movie if you haven't already. I talked to y'all about in when it came out, & again when I saw it for Amy's birthday!} Don't you just love the sound & feel of this song? Once again, I really like the whole entire thing. But if I had to pick a favorite part it'd probably be when he says, "Excuse me while I fall for you."

And now for my week...

Chris got his new phone, so I got his old one! Y'all may remember when I asked for your help in deciding on a phone case, but I never told y'all which one I decided on...

Whoooo has the cutest phone case in the land?! ;)

Guess what?! I finally saw a butterfly inside of a clear chrysalis!!

{Sadly, the butterfly died shortly after emerging from it, though} :(

I spent Halloween evening with these cool kids & their parents:

My favorite part of trick-or-treating was when Jesus gave candy to Steve:

ü

I forgot to tell y'al that my baby girl's costume won the award for being most creative at Scavengerween!

{She technically tied with another girl, but the other girl had gotten her costume idea from someone else last year. So Aaron told Elly to keep the award!}

& in case you have no idea what Elly's costume is, allow me to introduce you to Nyan Cat:

{& if anyone can explain how that video has over 87,000,000 views, I'd love to know!}

There are probably other things that I could share with y'all about my week, but my brain has been used too much lately! I've spent the past two days at a Precepts workshop. You might remember when I went to one last year. This one was at our church, which was super because I didn't have to drive as far. And the classes were just as great! The class I took on Friday was about how to study Old Testament history & prophecy, and today was how to study New Testament letters. & if you're wondering why my brain is mush, take a look at one very small portion of what we discussed:

Alrighty! I'm going to take care of a couple of things around the house, then I plan to fully take advantage of the extra hour of sleep tonight! I've got to rest up, because I'll be driving home late from NEEDTOBREATHE in CS on Monday!! I'll be sure to tell y'all all about it next week! I hope y'all are having a super great weekend!! ♥

"Montrose Blvd. Blues"

(by Craig Kinsey)

A few weeks ago, Sloan ended up with a day off, & I had a free day as well. We usually just hang around our general area of town. But with an entire day to do whatever we wanted, we decided to go into Houston! We began our day with coffee & dessert at Empire Cafe:

{Yes, we had dessert at 10:00 in the morning. No, we don't do that type of thing very often...}

After "breakfast", we walked through some antique stores & resale shops. I only spent $3 for a prism-thingy for my chandelier. Good job, eh?

This is when I found the amazing dress that I didn't buy.

Sigh...

Then we went to the Art Car Museum!

Neither one of us had been in years, so we thought it would be fun. In addition to the cars...

...there was an exhibit on God. It was different peoples' interpretations of Him, though, so it was interesting (to say the least).

I'm not real sure what this had to do with God, but it was fun to experiment on with my new camera!

Sloan captured this interesting display...

The phone receiver was just hanging from the cloud on the ceiling. And when I "answered" it, John Lennon's "Imagine" was playing. There were actually two displays of God calling. The other one said He was calling & asked if you'd answer...

Anyways...after that we grabbed a late lunch at Beaver's...

...then we headed home. It was such a fun day! :)
