"Happy Trails"

(by Roy Rogers & Dale Evans)

"Happy trails to you
Until we meet again
Happy trails to you
Keep smilin' until then

Who cares about the clouds when we'ere together?
Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather

Happy trails to you
'Til we meet again..."

Sally & Sarah are going home today. It has been a great few weeks, and I'm sad to see them go. Too bad England is so far away! In their honor, I'm posting a video from their very first visit to our house in 2003. Phillip & Dan are grown now (19 & 23). At the time of the video, Sarah was 6, Elizabeth had just turned five, and Cody was a few months away from turning three. How cute were they?!

"We Are Free Today"

(by Blake Quimby) Blake Quimby - Return - We Are Free Today

It has been another busy week for me!! Sally & Sarah are still here from England, & we have worn ourselves out! We explored Hobby Lobby, bought paint for the kids' rooms, spent some time at a scrapbook store, went to Wal-Mart a few times, packed a few boxes, had lunch with the kids, spent two hours at Toys"R"Us, and even more that I just can't remember right now!

The kids started their new school on Monday. Both of them have made a new friend or two, so I'm happy about that! We're getting up terribly early to make the drive, but we only have to do that for one more week. It is definitely worth it, so they don't have to switch schools after two weeks. That would be craziness!

Speaking of craziness ~> WE ARE OFFICIALLY HOMEOWNERS AGAIN!! Somehow, we went from looking at the house to closing in only 27 days!! Have you ever heard of that?! I seriously didn't think it could happen this quick, but here we are with the keys to our brand new house! We signed the papers yesterday morning, & Sally helped me start setting up the kitchen in the afternoon. I'm dropping her & the kids off at Incredible Pizza later on, and Amy & I are going to start painting! I'll post pictures as rooms start coming together!

As for today's song, it is by Blake Quimby. I can't believe this is the first time he has been on here! He & Christopher have been friends for several years now. Last night, we went to Chick-Fil-A, where my mister played bass with him at a benefit concert {& where, coincidentally, I happened to recognize the guy who spoke about ending poverty ~ we went to Bible school together! Small world!} The weather gave us a scare! A light rain cooled us off for a little while, but there were really dark clouds & lightning in the not-so-distant sky. It was sorta scary; but afterward, we could see an entire rainbow! It was pretty cool! Of course, a photographer I am not, so I only got part of it!

Well, I may not get a chance to post anything again this week. I'll be painting & trying to move as many things as possible. Because of the bleeding in Christopher's eye, he is on doctor's orders not to do anything strenuous. How convenient! ;) So, I'm doing as much as I can before the movers come next Saturday. Hopefully, they'll just need to get the big stuff.

"Fly With Me"

(by the Jonas Brothers) Fly With Me - Lines, Vines and Trying Times

Sorry, y'all. We've been listening to Radio Disney again. When we put the van in the shop, Chris took my iPod transmitter out. I've just got to put it back in there, so I can listen to my music! I guess I need to write that down on my list ~> because right now, if it's not on the list, it doesn't get done! The thing is, some of that music on Radio Disney is pretty catchy. I find myself humming all those songs quite a bit! Of course, I actually LIKE the Jonas Brothers. But, in all honesty, I didn't pay much attention to them until I realized that I used to know their parents!

We have had quite a productive week! We spent four hours at our walk through at the new house on Tuesday. It looks like it'll be ready in time to close on Friday! I can't believe how quickly this has come together! I met one of our neighbors on Thursday. I have made a phone call to each of the utility companies, but each one handles things differently. I've only managed to completely set up ONE switch! For everybody else, I have to call back within a certain time frame...water on Monday, gas on Friday...Such an ordeal!! Our phone company doesn't service that area, so it looks like we'll be changing our number. Oh joy! The kids met their teachers today, & they walked around the school several times. It seems a bit easier to navigate than their old school, so I'm confident that neither one will get lost on their way to class on Monday!

I completely missed my Blog Anniversary a few days ago. Toot toot! {that's me blowing a party horn!} So, I'm a little surprised at myself for making it a whole year! I haven't blogged as often as I intended at first, but I've listed out my reasons before, & I stand by them!! Except, now I'd add a #5 about packing up an entire house & moving in less than a month, with house guests for a good portion of that time! So, once things settle down, I'll try to blog more frequently. Until then, I'll try to post on Saturdays at least! Take care, my friends! Catch you on the flip flop!

"Bite My Tongue"

(by Relient K)

"I was gonna spell it out, every detail, but
I dropped the call before I spilled my guts
The floor stayed clean, like my conscience would be
'Cause if you heard anything, you didn't hear it from me

I'm sweeping up the seconds that tick off the clock
Saving them for later, when I'm too ticked to talk
And I need some time to search my mind
To locate the words that seem so hard to find

And sometimes I say things that
I wish that I could take back
The most crucial thing I lack is the thing called "tact"

And if you're always so intently listening
Then the smartest thing to say
Is to tell myself not to say a thing

Yeah I gotta keep quiet, quiet
Don't let it all come undone
'Cause if I dare open my mouth
It'll just be to bite my tongue
To bite my tongue

It seems I'm always close-minded with an open mouth
And the worst of me just seems to come right out
But I've never broken bones with a stone or a stick
But I've conjured up a phrase that can cut to the quick

'Cause sometimes I say things that
I wish that I could take back
And the smartest thing to say is to tell myself to keep

Quiet, quiet
Don't let it all come undone
'Cause if I dare open my mouth
It'll just be to bite my tongue
Yeah, I gotta keep quiet, quiet
Listen to Your voice
Because the power of Your words
Can repair all that I've destroyed

And when I finally do let it come from You
The peace of understanding grips my soul
You're the reason I
Have meaning in this life
So I swallow all my pride and give You control
Give it to You

It was a toss up between two Relient K tunes ("Bite My Tongue" and "Come Right Out & Say It") for today's theme song! I had a bit of drama today, & I'll have you know, I did bite my tongue. In hindsight, though, I probably should have come right out & said it! I'm not one to intentionally hurt people's feelings, so I didn't say everything that I could have said. The problem is, some things need to be said. I should have thought of these words (from the song I didn't choose today), "Even if the words are gonna hurt, we're better off this way". Then maybe I could have mustered some courage & spelled it all out!

(by Mitchel Musso)

Yet another teen Disney artist makes my blog...what's happening to me?! Is this what happens to mothers of preteens, or am I the only one? I don't necessarily choose to listen to these songs, but they're constantly playing on The Disney Channel, Radio Disney, & in my head! And then [as if I'm actually able to get the songs out of my head], they come on the little TV while I'm waiting in line at Wal-Mart! So here you go...a song by the boy who plays Oliver on Hannah Montana.

In case you're worried about my state of mind after my last post, yesterday was MUCH better! I promise, my kids are really great and, I'm not always such a grouch!

Here are a few pictures of what we've done with our guests this week:

"Yakety Yak"

(by The Coasters)

"Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor
You ain't gonna rock and roll no more
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Just finish cleanin' up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

You just put on your coat and hat
And walk yourself to the laundromat
And when you finish doin' that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip; he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain't got time to take a ride
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Yakety yak, yakety yak..."

Can I just say that sometimes I feel like I have teenagers already? Maybe I'm just tired, but tonight I actually lost it. We've been having a great visit with our friends from England, but the kids are getting on my nerves on a regular basis. It's like we've gone back to having toddlers, and I have to remind them of their manners. They seem to constantly interrupt me, and I have to explain repeatedly to not interrupt while I'm in a conversation. I think it may be doing some good; because Elizabeth wanted to ask Sally something tonight, & she waited until Chris was through talking. But that's only one time out of many.

Also, I apparently know nothing, because they don't listen to any advice I try to give them, & they insist that they know all of the answers on a regular basis. The latest incident is what caused me to raise my voice in front of house guests. It doesn't relate to the song, but the mood as of late does! It was more the result of a culmination of events, rather than the particular incident. Elly was stressing out, because she had set the DVR to record a movie, and it appeared as if it was starting but not recording. I told her to turn the TV on & press record, but she didn't do it. She started to panic about it, and went to the kitchen [apparently to go through there to the other TV, but I had no idea why she was doing it], so I hollered at her (a bit too loudly) to just do what I said. She did, and it turned out to simply be an advertisement saying that the movie was coming up next. But, then she started fussing about it recording twice (which is no big deal). I asked her what she was recording, and she insisted that it was the movie. I knew it was only recording the end of the show that was on at the moment, and sure enough, it stopped recording shortly after that.

The thing is I know that I shouldn't have yelled, and I know that I shouldn't make excuses. Part of my problem is that I need to get more rest. {For some crazy reason, I can't seem to sleep past 7:00 these days. Normally, I could easily sleep until 8:30 on a summer day.} I guess I'm also a little stressed with all that I still have to do before we close on the 28th. And, I will confess that I'm not the most patient person. But, I must say that I know it's not all me. My kids are super great (and I usually don't have much negative to say about them), but they aren't perfect. So there. Maybe I just needed to acknowledge that! I really am so blessed to have them as my kids. I am so thankful that God gave them to me to raise, though I feel like I fail miserably at times. More than anything, I am so glad to be their mom. All that said, I better get some rest so I can be a nice mom tomorrow. Please forgive this grouchy post.

"Seeing is Believing"

(by Hey Hollywood)

The words of the song don't relate again. I'm sorry that I'm not so great at actually picking theme songs! It seemed great in theory! Maybe I should change this blog to, "The theme title of the day is..." or maybe, "A song that may or may not relate to my day is..." (neither title sounds quite right, though).

Anyways, at Christopher's appointment this morning, Dr Boniuk thought that the hemorrhaged area had improved enough to perform the laser surgery today. The laser should prevent the blood vessel from bleeding anymore, as well as cauterize the entire area that was affected by radiation. So, maybe this won't happen again, & hopefully this will help prevent radiation retinopathy (basically, damage to the retina due to radiation leaking through the blood vessels). His vision had improved to 20/400. (Yes, I said "improved" to that acuity, which shows how bad it was last week). He went right to work afterward & actually made it to a 10:00 meeting that he really didn't want to miss! Now, we just need his body to absorb the blood in his eye, and hopefully his vision will be better. As always, we are so grateful for your prayers!

"Let Me Go On"

(by Seabird)

Yes, another Seabird song that I LOVE! I have listened to them quite a bit this week, because I really think they're my new favorite band! This particular song isn't my absolute favorite, but I've already posted two of those already! I happen to have two versions of this song; therefore, it's today's song because I've listened to it the most! They did an awesome job on this one at the concert, btw.

Before I forget, I told you I'd explain why Chris is wearing the eye patch again. Last Saturday, he started seeing floaters again. Before too long, he realized that it was actually blood that he was seeing. He called the emergency number for his ocular oncologist, who said it sounded like something hemorrhaged & to come in first thing Monday morning. On Monday, he confirmed that a blood vessel on the surface of the tumor had hemorrhaged. His retina still looks good, though. He'll be going in again this Monday for a follow-up & to schedule another laser treatment (possibly on Friday). If you remember last time, he went to work afterward. So, he should be good to go again this time. His vision is very bad right now. He could only see light on the chart at 20/400 (but no letters), & he could barely count the doctor's fingers from 3 feet away. So, he ended up with a terrible headache on Monday (& came home from work early, which he never does). So, he has been wearing his eye patch to prevent headaches, and it seems to be helping (though, not completely). So, there you go...I'll keep you updated!

I believe I've had one of the craziest, busiest weeks in a LONG time!! Who knew precisely a week ago that we would have a contract on a house, & I would have 40+ boxes packed & in my formal dining area?!
From 2009 Spring & Summer
[& this is only half of the room!]

I feel like I've accomplished a lot, but I still have quite the list of things I want to accomplish before our house guests arrive on Tuesday. Mainly, I need to:
  • pack a few more boxes of items I don't need for the next few weeks
  • take a couple of boxes to a donation center
  • sell a couple of boxes of books at Half-Price Books (for probably about $1! ~>update: I actually made $15!)
  • take several boxes over to Jessica's for a garage sale we plan to have in a couple of months (How awesome is she? She's letting me store my stuff in her garage, so I don't get it all confused with the stuff I want to keep!)
  • finish buying school supplies {Ahhhh! Where can I find a simple 2 pk of red checking pencils?! ~>Answer: Wendy's house!! My sis-in-law dug through her art supplies & found two for Cody!}
Today, we are concentrating on the garage! Yikes!! I think Chris is heading that project, and I'll be inside dealing with the rest of the list! [Hey, it's only fair since I've packed every single box by myself! So, don't feel sorry for him! ~>update: he packed his office stuff AND sorted the garage stuff today. 'Cuz he's awesome!]

Don't worry, I won't bore you with all of my packing & moving details over the next few weeks. I'm not going to be doing much packing while our guests are here, and I really won't have the time to blog much during that time, either!

(by Seabird) Sometimes - 'Til We See the Shore

The words don't really apply, but you'll see why I posted this in a little bit...

I've been very spoiled with even more birthday celebrations this week! There's nothing wrong with getting older, if you have great friends to celebrate with! My friends Amy, Kelli & Kyla took me out for dinner & ice cream on Tuesday night. {I call them "my birthday girls".} We really enjoy celebrating each others' birthdays & buying each other gifts. As adults, we don't tend to have many gifts to open on our birthday. So, we've taken it upon ourselves to buy for each other, and we love knowing that our friends will have several gifts! Here we are at Maggie Moo's after dinner:

As if I hadn't celebrated enough, my mister took me to see Seabird last night!! Before the concert, we went to W Grill & Catalina Coffee. Good stuff!! Here's my mister with his lovely latte:

[Yes, he's wearing his patch again. I'll explain why in my next post. But first, let me ask this: if you saw a stranger wearing an eye patch, would you take a picture of him? Because several people did that last night, & I thought it was odd]

We saw Brandon (my IRL friend Natalie's brother) when we got to the venue. He is playing bass for Seabird, so he introduced us to all of the guys in the band. We hung out with him before they got on stage. The concert was GREAT! The worst part was that it ended too soon! Here's a picture from the concert, with Brandon rockin' out on the bass there on the right:

& here's a video clip that my mister took on his phone {make sure your speakers aren't up too loud!}:

"Kung Fu Fighting"

(by Carl Douglas)

The kids & I saw Kung Fu Panda as part of Cinemark's Summer Movie Clubhouse this morning. This was the first time I've seen it all the way through, & I thought I'd share my favorite quotes from the movie. They're probably everybody's favorites, but I'm sharing them anyways:

#1. In Po's dream at the beginning of the movie, he's a Kung Fu fighter that says, "There is no charge for awesomeness... or attractiveness." How awesome is that?! I love it. Such confidence, even if it is just a dream!

#2. Shifu wants to try to prevent Tai Lung from escaping prison, & Oogway tells him, "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it." I sat there & pondered that through the next scene ~ actually, throughout the rest of the movie! I don't really believe in "destiny" per se. I believe that there's a balance of God's will and free will that I will never fully comprehend. But I know that there are times when we know something is going to happen, or that God desires for it to happen, but we don't want it. We fight Him on it & try to do things our own way. And what do you happens anyway. And generally, we've made it harder on ourselves & possibly gone through some heartache trying to avoid the situation that we should have just allowed to happen in the first place!

#3. Oogway tells Shifu, "My friend, the panda will never fulfill his destiny, nor you yours until you let go of the illusion of control." I don't even think I need to explain why that was so profound ~ but you know me, I have to say something! That pretty much sums up a good portion of my life! It's something I still struggle with at times. The illusion of control. I am not, have never been, nor will I ever be in control. I've tried to be many times, in so many areas of my life. As I mentioned earlier this year (on Day Two of my tattoo story), I thought I was in control when I was abusing my body. Little did I know that I was completely out of control! Oogway knew what he was talking about when he called it an illusion.

So there you have it! Is there a quote from a movie that has really caused you to think?

"Our House"

(by Madness)

I'm wide awake with a migraine & my brain going 90 to nothing, so I thought I might as well get up and be productive! I've got so much to say that I don't even know where to start! First of all, we put a contract on a NEW house on Saturday!! It's in the neighborhood of one of my very best friends, so I'm quite excited! Of course, there were only a few neighborhoods that we had in mind ~ and three of my closest friends live in them ~ so it was bound to happen! But, a new house in Jana's neighborhood?! Seriously?! I'm just so excited!! Also, just three doors down is another very sweet family from church, so I'm really stoked about that, too!

I really didn't think we'd be able to have a BRAND NEW house, so I'm even more ecstatic! It's an inventory home, and we've gotten in just in time to pick the carpet! Everything else is so pretty that I'm not a bit disappointed that we didn't get to pick it! The front isn't everything that I've always dreamed of, but the inside MORE than makes up for it. We're supposed to close at the end of the month, so needless to say, I've got a busy month ahead!! I'm sure I'll be posting more about the house as time goes on.

Did I mention that I'm excited?!

Here's a picture of Cody putting the "Sold" sticker on the sign. The picture with Elly in it was all cattywompus, because it was bright outside (& I had the beginning of the migraine that I currently have full blown 36 hours later...)

I haven't even told y'all that our lovely friends from England are coming next week, and they'll be staying until the end of the month!! So, if you don't hear from me for awhile, let's just say that I'm a little busy!!

And now, for the anniversary pictures & such that I've been promising...

First of all, let me say how awesome my mister is! We weren't really giving gifts (because we're saving for a house), but he surprised me with flowers, chocolate, a bottle of sparkling grape juice & a mixed metal necklace with my family's names on it! I've been wanting one for awhile now, and I just love it! What's even more neat is that, while I was getting ready for our date, I was thinking about the fact that I didn't have a pretty necklace to wear that night! {in case you really like it, he got it from Mama Beth Bling on Etsy}

We went out to Benihana for dinner, and it was super yummy! Plus, we had a $30 coupon, so it wasn't very expensive either! Because we were celebrating, we got to wear the really cool hats while we ate delicious cheesecake:

The kids were awesome! Elly made our bed for us that morning, and she hinted at other plans, too. When we got home from our date, they had hand made notes, S'mores & chocolate milk waiting for us! How cute is that?! Cody had even spelled out "I♥U" in chocolate chips!

No matter how full you are from dinner, when your kids do something sweet like that, you eat it!!

& for those of you who aren't friends with me on Facebook (or didn't see the post), I just had to share with you the crazy/sweet post that my mister left on my wall for my birthday. He's quite the comedian, so in case you perceive any of it as an almost insult, that's his attempt at humor! {& yes, he's a Flight of the Conchords fan, so there's at least one FOTC reference in there, too!}:

Happy Birthday! I love you. You're the best. You smell good. You have very pretty eyes. I like your theme. You have nice skin. Everyday is a good hair day for you. You're cool. You could be a part time model. You are like a grape that has been stomped and the juice has been stored in a bottle in a cellar for a really long time. You're not getting older, you're aging! You know, like wine. Expensive wine. You're very nice. I like your smile. You are the perfect height. Did I mention your eyes? You drive better than a lot of women. Your teeth are very white and straight. You do a good job at not spending all of my money. Scrap booking is your thing. You make food that tastes good. Your feet are not too big. I like the way you make coffee. You really know how to work a DVR. You blog regularly. You put up with me.

"No Surprise"

(by Daughtry)

Many, many thanks to my wonderful friend Amy for the Daughtry album!! She got it for me as a birthday present, & I'm loving it! (I knew I would, of course!!) I already knew this song, so I've listened to it the most ~ but the other songs on the album are equally as good! I'm sure that comes as no surprise! ;)

Here's a picture of me at Amy's house. She made me a yummy sundae, & her son thought I needed a candle. This was what she had!!

As I promised yesterday, here's a picture of Chase & me on our birthday!

I also got to meet Chuck E. Cheese!

I had a super great birthday week! Jess & I went out for dinner on Wednesday night & shared a couple of desserts. She got me a lovely iced tea pitcher! The kids & I had been stuck in the house all week (because Silvie was in the shop), so my friend Kim picked us up for lunch on Thursday. We went to Chick-fil-A, and she got me a chocolate shake as an early birthday present! Last night (after my fun morning at Chuck E. Cheese's & my afternoon at Amy's), we had our usual pizza & movie night at home. The kids watched a movie in the living room, and Chris & I watched Confessions of a Shopoholic! I got loads of sweet birthday greetings on facebook. It was a great day! I promise I'll post about our anniversary soon!
