"The Monster Mash"

(by Bobby "Boris" Pickett) Monster

I'm taking a break from my usual "Scrobbled Saturday" post today, because it's Halloween. I know some people don't like today's song & feel like it's over-played ~ but I happen to like it, because it brings back happy memories of my childhood music class!

Today was the kids' school fair! I volunteered for a few hours & got to meet some other moms. I'm still trying to "fit in" there, so it's nice to have a chance to meet more people & have the chance to talk to them for awhile. So far, most everyone that I've met has been so nice & welcoming, so I'm glad for that! At first, I only sorta knew one lady from church. Then, at curriculum night, I was so glad to see Pepper's vet! {I'm sure you've experienced that feeling where you walk into a room & know absolutely nobody! So, to look over the sea of faces & see a familiar one smiling at you...It's amazing what that can do!} Anyways, I got to meet his wife that night, and I've managed to run into her several times now. She is super nice! Yesterday, as I was walking in to Cody's "Solar System Parade", I saw the pastor of the church where Chris played bass for a year or so. Again, it was nice to see someone that I kinda know & have somebody to stand with! I like to think that I'm outgoing, but I've come to realize that it's only if I'm in a comfortable place! And a school where I don't know anyone is NOT a comfortable place! It's funny that even as a grown woman who finally feels somewhat secure in myself, I still have this feeling of wanting to belong. Does that ever go away?

Here's Cody at the parade I mentioned earlier:

& Elly at the fair this afternoon:

Tonight, we're going to Wade & Amy's for our annual trick-or-treating tradition! Elly is a clown, & Cody is Anakin (for now ~ he may change to a hippie once we get there):

"Turn it Up (Astros Version)"

(by Chamillionaire)

[The song disappeared from Groovesharek, but it was a little strange anyways...]

Today is another sad day in Houston Astros history: Phil Garner was NOT picked to be their manager. :( He has always been my favorite baseball player, and I'm sure he always will be. {I know, not Biggio?! ~> he's my 2nd favorite!} I possess only one baseball card, and it's a Phil Garner 1987 Topps.

[for the record, that's a SAD face not a kissy one!]

It all goes back to a baseball player, a parade & a little girl on the sidelines, circa 1981. I was the little girl. Phil Garner, Houston Astros Third Baseman, was in the parade. AND HE WAVED AT ME. And I know it was me, because I was the only one with a foam finger waving wildly at him!!

OK, so I couldn't find a childhood picture of myself in an Astros shirt (or with the aforementioned foam finger ~ sorry to disappoint!), but that one was taken in '81. In searching for a relevant picture, I came across this one of a boy from middle school:

who just so happens to be Phil Garner's son Eric. He was a nice boy who lived next door to my good friend Will. He was exactly 10 days older than me, which I thought was pretty cool, for some reason. I always remember him on his birthday & wonder how he's doing. My friend Natalie's husband shares a birthday with Eric [& I think I even told him that once or twice ~ as if he cared!]

Anyways, "small world" connections aside, I really think they should've picked Phil for the job. I mean, seriously: no other manager has ever taken the Astros to the World Series! I don't know anything about the guy they hired, but I hope he's good! We need some help from somewhere!! Alright, enough lamenting! If this is any consolation, Phil, I totally would have picked you!

"Trolley Wood"

(by Eisley) Trolley Wood - Room Noises

flashvars="" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="window" />

I've been in an Eisley mood this week. Am I silly that I LOVE that they're from Texas?! This one's an oldie but a goodie! :) I don't have a particular reason why this is one of my favorites. It just IS. I love the way it sounds!

I've been a busy little bee again this week! I'm sorry I'm pretty much only posting on Saturdays lately! Maybe if things would slow down, I could actually have some song-themed days to blog about. OR, maybe then things would be too boring to actually have a theme song! I don't know, but for now I'll just fill you in on the happenings around here!

This week I...

...paid off a HUGE chunk of debt

{thanks to the IRS & President Obama!}

...had a somewhat disappointing ARD meeting at school
{my sweet boy has to stay in speech for another year ~ I know it's best for him, but he'd rather not be pulled out of class 2x a week! On a positive note, his teachers think he should be tested for GT. So that's cool, except it would call for him to be pulled out of class for another hour each week! :/}

...became the mother of an 11-year-old

...helped decorate for my little friend Clara's party

{OK, I said "helped", but I really only started the process! Jana & her mom finished making it look like a room fit for a princess!}

...planted a garden

{& I've already been visited by THREE butterflies!} to show off the new house to my mom & step-dad!

{OK, so I didn't take a picture of our guests, but I got this shot of the kids "making" the cookies that they brought!}

...didn't get enough sleep!
{as usual!}

I better post this & get to bed before the clock strikes midnight!! I hope y'all have a super great week!!

"In My Daughter's Eyes"

(by Martina McBride) Martina McBride - Martina - In My Daughter's Eyes

"In my daughter's eyes
I am a hero
I am strong and wise
And I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes
Everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light
And the world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me
Gives me strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe
In my daughter's eyes

And when she wraps her hand around my finger
Oh, it puts a smile in my heart
Everything becomes a little clearer
I realise what life is all about
It's hangin' on when your heart has had enough
It's givin' more when you feel like givin' up
I've seen the light
It's in my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes
I can see the future
A reflection of who I am
And what will be
And though she'll grow and some day leave
Maybe raise a family
When I'm gone, I hope you'll see
How happy she made me
For I'll be there
In my daughter's eyes"

My baby girl is 11 years old today! I can't believe how fast these years have gone by! She has turned into a preteen before my eyes! Happy birthday, Elly! I love you bunches!

"Live to Party"

(by the Jonas Brothers) Jonas Brothers - Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (Soundtrack) - Live to Party

I haven't listened to much music this week, so you get to hear the one thing I've been hearing alot in the last 24 hours: the Jonas theme song! {It was either that or one of the songs that the kids play repeatedly on Guitar Hero!} My baby girl turns 11 tomorrow, & she got the first season of the Jonas TV show for her birthday. She watched the whole thing (plus the bonus episodes) at her sleepover last night & this morning {thus, the reason I've been hearing the theme song}.

For Elly's birthday party, she wanted a black & pink theme like last year. She said she wanted some guitars on the plates & such, but I told her we would probably just have to do pink & black stuff. I was so happy when I found these cute napkins at Target:

& here are the goodie baskets:

Speaking of Elly, I finished decorating her room this week!

& the hall bathroom...

& I finished our bathroom a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't post pictures yet 'cuz I thought y'all would laugh at me for decorating my bathroom before anything else!

I'll post more pictures as I finish the rooms!

"Live Life Loud"

(by Hawk Nelson)

I FINALLY got the new Hawk Nelson album! It's been out for a couple of weeks, but I've been a little busy! ;) Today's song is the title track. I'm not even gonna pretend to know what the video has to do with the song! There are a few serious songs (about God, growing up, losing a loved one, etc.) & a couple of random ones ('cuz they're a punk band ~> who else would write a little song about The Calgary Flames winning the Stanley cup?!). Overall, I like it, but I haven't picked a favorite yet. There's one called "Shaken" that may be the one. We'll see...

I hope y'all have had a good week! Mine wasn't quite as busy as the one before, but I haven't caught up on my sleep yet. {It doesn't help that I stayed out too late last night for Ladies' Game Night at the church.} I think National Night Out went well on Tuesday! We had about 10-15 families show up. One neighbor ended up staying until about 10:30, & he really likes my mister. So that's cool! I was able to talk to one of my brothers on their birthday. My dad saw "the baby", and he took my love & birthday wishes with him. I called Ivar & left him a message, & HE ACTUALLY CALLED ME BACK!! That totally made my day! We only talked for a few minutes (probably during a smoke break at work!), but I was so glad to have the chance to talk to him!

My babies had early dismissal on Thursday & Friday. Their new school does parent/teacher conferences for their first report card. I don't quite understand why some parents don't want to meet with their child's teacher; but apparently that's the case sometimes, so this is one way to get parents up there! I didn't actually get to meet with either of my kids' teachers, though. Cody's was sick, so I met with his afternoon teacher (who loves him, of course!), & my meeting with Elly's teacher is next week. They really are good kids, so I don't expect any behavior issues. Cody's grades were great, & as far as I know, Elly's are good, too! For their afternoons off, we did exciting things like get flu shots & go to the chiropractor! We also went to The Chocolate Bar on Thursday, & Cody's friend came over yesterday. Oh, & I went to the brand new Kroger near my house. Such excitement!!

We had one crazy mishap yesterday: during a torrential downpour, a big gust of wind apparently blew the grill off the back patio & broke it to pieces! It looks like a small car accident. It knocked over a couple of potted plants, & an iron trellis was completely bent over. The plants are fine, but the poor grill will never recover. May Mr. Perfect Flame rest in peace. Well, I'm off to hang out with my family. I hope y'all have a great weekend!

"Little Brothers"

(by Candace from Phineas and Ferb)

"Little Brother
I remember when you first came home
Then came another
Little brother of our own
Even when you break my toys
You will always be my

Little brothers
'Cuz you're younger
We're related
And you're boys

Even when you're making too much noise
You will always be my

Little brothers
'Cuz you're younger
We're related
And you're boys

Little brothers..."

Two of my little brothers have birthdays today. Ivar is 29 (oh my goodness!) & Aaron is 21 (what?!) ~> how'd they grow up so fast?!

I remember when Ivar first came into my family. He was four (& I was nine) when my dad & his mom got married. He was a cute little guy that Kerry & I would play hide-and-seek with. We loved to watch him dance around to Michael Jackson songs! He is now my not-so-little-brother, and he would totally beat me up if he read that! But, he lives a few hours away {and I'm sure he doesn't read my blog}, so I think I'm safe!

Aaron was the baby brother I always wanted! {OK, if I'm completely honest, I wanted a sister! But he was a BABY, and that was the main thing! Plus, the second I saw him, I was in love!} He was born when I was in 8th grade, and he was my baby! I didn't live with him full-time, but when I was there, he was MINE! I took care of him constantly ~ because I wanted to, not because I had to. He's a good uncle to my kids ~ playing games with them & such ~ and I'm so glad for that! He's not in such a great place right now, and my heart breaks for him. He will always be my baby brother, even though he's about twice my size! :)

“A Love That’s Stronger Than Our Fear”

(by Derek Webb)

I don't know if you've checked out any of Derek Webb's stuff, but I really like him. I don't know if you remember my post on Inauguration Day, but that was one of his songs. He is a pretty controversial former (& maybe current again?) member of Caedmon's Call. He's not afraid to say what he's thinking, politically or otherwise. He tends to cross the line that mainstream Christianity has drawn. Apparently, he uses profanity in a song to Christians about hypocrisy & getting hung up on people doing wrong. I don't know why he felt the need to use profanity, but I get his point.

I'm not sure if his theology is messed up (as some Christians say), or if he really is trying to reform Christians who judge instead of love. I'm definitely a fan of following Jesus & loving others despite their sin. But, I'm not one to make excuses or justify sin, either. I feel that Jesus calls us to be holy, as He is holy. It's all about loving Him & having a relationship with Him that will cause you to be like Him. It takes time, though ~> a lifetime, actually. And, some of us are a little slow! Look at the Israelites, who continuously saw God provide for them & do miraculous stuff. Yet, they continued to rebel & turn away from Him to worship idols made of their own hands. I'm doing a Bible study on the book of Judges right now, and it's crazy to see their cycle repeated over & over again. Unfortunately, we are still like that today ~ the miracles may not seem so obvious, and the idols don't, either.

Anyways, thanks for chasing that rabbit with me today. If you have any thoughts, feel free to share them with me! I'm not even going to try to interpret today's song, but I fully believe that there is "a Love that's stronger than our fear".

"The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)"

(by Simon & Garfunkel)

"Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobble stones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy

Ba da da da da da da...
Feelin' Groovy

Hello lamp post, whatcha knowin'?
I've come to watch your flowers growin'
Ain'tcha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo
Feelin' groovy

Ba da da da da da da...
Feelin' Groovy

I've got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you,
All is groovy

Ba da da da da da da..."

I'm feeling MUCH better now! I took a nap yesterday afternoon & slept for a solid seven hours last night (thank you, Hannah, for the suggestion & the prayer for a great night's sleep). I'm sorry about the pity party post the other day! I did it to myself, ya know. I think I need to adopt today's song as my motto, or something. I need to just slow down! I make myself WAY too busy ~ it's no wonder that I wear myself out sometimes.

I've been wearing closed-toed shoes for over a month now, because I haven't found the time to paint my toenails! If you really know me, you're more than aware of the fact that I wear flip-flops about 342 days of the year! {All except for the 3 or 4 weeks of "cold" weather we have here!} But, I'm the weirdo that has to have pretty feet in order to wear them, & lately, that has NOT been happening.

And, at the VIPS meeting at the kids' school, why did I feel the need to sign up for 75% of the activities?! I had already agreed to be the JA volunteer for Elly's class. That should have been sufficient! But no, I signed up to help with a bunch of little things, thinking that they weren't very often, so I could do it all! The problem is, they seem to all be at one time, & that is RIGHT NOW!!

  • The Butterfly Garden (involves occasional weeding & planting) needed weeding yesterday
  • the 5th graders' six week party (which only happens 6x a year) is this afternoon
  • a staff appreciation lunch (which only happens 4x a year) is next week
  • the workroom (we rotate grades to cover each week, or I can go up there whenever I have extra time ~ what's this thing called "extra time"?) has no 3rd grade parents signed up for next week
  • the school carnival (one day out of the school year) is this month
  • & I'm sure there are other things that I'll be getting an email about any moment (btw, I DID get an email while writing this & has to add a bullet point ~ yikes!)...

As if that wasn't enough, I agreed to be my street's host for National Night Out next week (btw ~ isn't it great that Texas has it's own day that's different from the entire rest of the country?! August really would be WAY too hot!!) I need to make flyers, pass them out to the entire street, pick up the host package, and buy the fixings for ice cream floats...

Elly's birthday is in just a couple of weeks, & I haven't even started planning her party. Fortunately, it's just a sleepover, so there's not SO much to plan. The girls will just do whatever they feel like doing at the time. I still need to send out invitations, buy a cake & pick up some party favors & something crafty for them to do at midnight or so.

Oh ya, & did you know we just moved?! I'm still trying to get everything sorted in the new house! I have stuff to get rid of, and, I'd love to have it all done in time for the community garage sale in a couple of weeks. ( that a crazy goal?)

I haven't even mentioned church, Bible study, & volunteering in the Youth ministry! Man, I'm tired just thinking about all of this! My sister-in-law mentioned the other day that she could tell I've been busy by looking at the lack of activity on my Facebook! Well, I guess I'm off to update my status...
