(by John Anderson) Swingin'

Is today's song a blast from the past, or what?! For the record: though I am a true Texas girl (born & raised), this song is really way too country for me! The country music that I like is more along the lines of Taylor Swift & a little Rascal Flatts! But, the title is appropriate for today, so there you go!

If you haven't already figured it out, I'm just a swingin' as I type these words! I'm actually on my back porch on a glider, & I don't even know a Charlotte in real life! But it's essentially the same! (ha ha!) I was afraid that I got my new cushion a little too late to enjoy it until the Fall, but it is surprisingly cool right now. Though I use the term "cool" loosely. It's 87 degrees, and I'm in the shade with a little breeze blowing through the patio! Seriously, though, it feels great! I was trying to read my Bible in the kitchen this morning & kept getting interrupted. So, I thought I'd try the patio, & what do you know?! It has been great! No butterflies have visited my garden, but I have seen a bird or two!

My baby puppy came outside with me, but she keeps trying to get me to go back in! There's some construction going on close behind us, so she's afraid for our lives! She keeps going to the door ~ but when I open it for her to go inside, she looks at me like, "You have to go in, too! They're coming to get us!" When I don't go in, she decides to stay outside & bravely protect me hide out behind the glider!

I hope you have a nice, peaceful place to relax and enjoy God's beauty today!

"Sleeping In"

(by The Postal Service) Sleeping

...that's what I've been up to for a good part of my morning {& hope to be doing a LOT of this summer!} I've been exhausted since before the move, & I'm more than ready to not be tired anymore!

I'll be spending a good portion of the rest of my day here:

Because {unfortunately} it doesn't look like that right now! The only time I spent in the kitchen over the weekend was when I was making messes cooking! Then, when I should've been cleaning it yesterday, my mister & I went on a Costco & coffee date! Oh the exciting dates you have when you've been married for 13 11/12 years! {Yes, it was exactly one month before our anniversary, so he said we were celebrating! He posted it on fb & said that if somebody asked if we've celebrated every month since we got married, he would say, "Nope. Every day!" Such a goofball!!}

I hope y'all have a more exciting Monday than mine!

"Turn it On"

(by Hawk Nelson ) Turn

I really thought I'd have more time to blog this summer, but so far it has turned out to be less! I worked a couple of days this week, so I haven't really had the time to post {much less catch up with everybody else's blogs!} I'm thinking about joining some memes when I have the time, because I feel like I don't have many blog-worthy topics these days. I also feel like I need to expand my musical horizons, because I have a hard time coming up with a song sometimes! {I'm up for suggestions!! My friend Laura left one for me on facebook, & I'm totally gonna use it one day! If you think of any that would be perfect for a particular topic, let me know!} So, there you go...my little blog dilemma.

As for my week, the days that I didn't work were quite busy! The kids & I went swimming a couple of times! We met Jana & Clara Belle at the neighborhood pool one day! The next day, we had a little swim/play date at Cody's friend's house. There were 3 moms & six kids ~> it was perfect, because each kid had a playmate! Elly is friends with the daughter of one of the moms, plus both of the other moms have boys that are the same age! One evening, I met a friend for coffee. Then, I met Laura for ice cream one afternoon (Don't tell the kids! They assumed I was meeting for coffee, & I didn't correct them. Is that awful?! I know, I'm so not winning the "Mother of the Year" award for that one!!) I went scrapbooking in the neighborhood last night & only completed 4 pages. But that's progress, so I should just be glad that I accomplished something! This evening, we're getting together with our Community Group from church. That's my week in a nutshell!

And for today's song, I'm not sure how it ended up being played the most. It's Hawk Nelson, so that explains part of it! It doesn't really relate to my current life circumstances, but it's still good! My favorite line is, "I don't wanna just live my life. I want to mean something."

Well, I'm off to make some dessert for tonight! I hope y'all have a super great weekend!

(by Justin Bieber, featuring Ludacris) Baby

I haven't shared anything from this series in awhile, so I figured it was time! I have to confess that this MISspeak is not my own. It's just too funny not to share! It happened when we were at a Chinese buffet with some friends. My mister asked Karina a question, & she said, "What, Baby?" I didn't even have time to process what she said when she started apologizing & was all embarrassed! It was hilarious to me, because I knew she didn't mean anything by it!

But that's not all...at the end of the meal, we got our fortune cookies, & this was Karina's:

I'm sure you can guess where my mister was sitting...directly across from her!

Have you ever accidentally used a term of endearment when talking to someone you wouldn't generally speak to in such an affectionate way?

"Everything Is Different Now"

(by Stellar Kart) Everything

I had a good week despite the fact that I dropped my baby girl off at PreTeen camp on Tuesday. I meant to take some pictures of the various things we did this week, but I didn't do very well! {I'm sorry!} I started a very part-time job for my friend's husband who owns an adjusting company. I should be going in for a couple of days next week, too. I like it because it's the same type of work that I did for the flood adjuster after Hurricane Katrina. Plus, it gives me a little money for summer stuff! Cody & I went to the pool after work Tuesday night, then Jana picked Cody up on Wednesday & took him to the pool while I was working ~ what a blessing! Our friends Tucker & Cassie came over for dinner that night ~ & we enjoyed our time with them, as usual! Cody had a friend over on Thursday, then he did his little trick & it worked! [His little trick goes like this: the mom comes to pick up her son, & Cody gets into their vehicle. We act like we don't know where he is, & he hopes that we really don't know! His plan is that they'll drive off with him in their vehicle, so that he'll get to go home with them for awhile! It has never actually worked before, but this time the mom was all for him going home with them!] So, he went to his friend's house for a couple of hours, & I got my nails done! On Friday, my friend Laura came over from scones & coffee. Then, Amy & Alex came over to swim at our neighborhood pool all afternoon! Today, we picked Elly up from camp! She had a wonderful week & pretty much talked non-stop for the entire two hours it took to get home! I'm so glad to have her back!

This afternoon/evening, we went to Wally & Teresa's! I only took a couple of pictures of Ryco with Cody & Chris. I accidentally had it on the nighttime setting (which wasn't the best), so I snagged this pic from Wally's facebook! {It was taken the day of Ryco's dedication back in January.}

One last thing by way of an eye update: Thursday morning, my mister had another follow-up appointment with Dr C (the retina specialist who performed the vitrectomy & gave him the steroid shot). His vision is now 20/160, & he has a little cataract (something that we figured would happen sooner or later). At this point, Dr C isn't doing anything about the cataract. He explained that in normal people (& by normal, he means elderly people who tend to develop them naturally as they age), it takes about three years for a cataract to be a problem. In Christopher's case, if he has to have another steroid shot, the cataract will grow larger sooner (causing him to need cataract surgery sooner). So, that's what we're looking at. We'll know more at his next appointment in August. One thing that struck Chris & me as quite funny was that Dr C said, "Cataract surgery is like a picnic." Then he quickly said, "You should never refer to a surgery as a picnic." But we understood what he meant! Compared to everything else that my mister has endured (like having a plaque the size of a nickel in his eye for a week!), cataract surgery is nothing.

As for today's song ~> I don't know if it really counts, because I accidentally left my iPod on shuffle the entire time we were at Wally & Teresa's! But, I know for a fact that I listened to this song several times, because I love it! I got it in a free music sampler from INO Records awhile back, but somehow I really didn't notice it until this week. This is the title track to the Stellar Kart CD that came out in March, and I want it! {hint hint, Mister ~ your Mrs has a birthday next month!} The whole song is great, but my favorite part is this:
I'm not going back
To the way that it used to be
A sad sad song
That was yesterday

Everything is different now
You're the love I've finally found
Everything is different now
Because of You

I hope you're having a super great weekend!!

"I Will Never See the Sun"

(by Great Lake Swimmers) I

To those of you who live near me & know how very evident the sun is right now, today's song may seem a little odd! But, the song totally applied to our week at the lake ~ which I finally have the time to blog about! I don't know if I've explained our relationship with Dan & Sheryl before, so here's a brief history (for those of you who are new): They were very close to my mister's family when he was growing up; & when my mother-in-law passed away, Sheryl honored her request to take care of us! They consider my mister their godson, & my kids call them "Uncle Dan" & "Aunt Sheryl". We built our first house across the street from their oldest son Geary, which was only a mile down the road from Dan & Sheryl! Sheryl was in the delivery room with me when I gave birth to both of my babies, & we stayed at their house for the first few days of both of my babies' lives. The kids & I spent at least one evening a week at their house from 1998 until we moved in 2004. I consider them my in-laws, even though I'm not married to their birth son! I could go on, but I said this would be brief! Back to the main story...

Despite the lack of sun & a crazy storm that hovered over our area, we had a super great week! Geary's wife (Shelly) brought their son Josiah on Tuesday. Originally, he was only going to stay until Wednesday, but the rain changed their plans & he got to stay the entire week! He & Cody had so much fun doing boy stuff!

Elly did some crafts, we played Mexican Dominoes & Canasta, and we swam off the dock once. I thought it was nice to just relax, but Dan & the kids were hoping to take the boat out. Finally on Thursday, there was a brief lull in the storm!

We took the boat to a spot under the bridge near their cove & went swimming. Daphne (the puppy) wasn't too fond of the water!

Anticipating the next round of rain showers, we didn't get the tube or anything.

After swimming for awhile, we enjoyed a picnic lunch on the boat! Daphne got a little lunch meat & licked the crumbs off Elly's face!

We thought we heard some thunder in the distance, so we decided we should head in but the boat wouldn't start! Fortunately, they had a solar charger. We didn't hear any more thunder, so the kids swam for a little while longer, & apparently there was just enough sun to do the job! The boys both took a turn at the wheel, & we made it back to the dock shortly before another torrential downpour! {Can you tell how dark the clouds were getting?!}

Friday was finally a sunny day, so the boys stayed in their swim trunks until it was time to go! We had to leave mid-afternoon to take Josiah home on our way to pick up Cody's tux. Am I crazy that I got all teary-eyed as I looked at our old house across the street? The kids & I took a drive through the neighborhood, going by the elementary school & the house where their dad used to live with his family before Mama Beth passed away. It was such a good time, as always! I'm so thankful for friends that have become family!

"Skol Vikings"

(by ToneEFly?)

In case you didn't see my facebook status, I have officially become a Minnesota Vikings fan! Houston may be my hometown, but Ryan Moats is my homeboy! I grew up an Oilers fan; but since the Texans became a team while I was living in Dallas, I hadn't completely switched my allegiance to them. When we got to know Ryan, I became a fan ~ but I have said all along that I was a Ryan fan & would always be a fan of the team he was playing for! He was released from the Texans on Thursday and has now signed with the Vikings.

Speaking of Ryan, we had a super great weekend with him & his beautiful wife Tamishia. He invited us to stay with them while we were in the Dallas area for the wedding, & we had such a great time! We probably stayed up way too late both nights, but it's always worth it when you're hanging out with friends!

The kids loved the room that they stayed in ~ with the circle bed & pretty colors!

Here's a picture of the boys

We went to Dave & Busters on Saturday night {is Tamishia not just beautiful with her pregnant glow?!}

My mister played shoot 'em up games with Ryan

Gitmo is so fluffy you just want to snuggle with him all day {but, like our crazy dog, it's only on his terms!}

& because that picture didn't do his eyes justice, I had to include this one ~ are his eyes HUGE, or what?!

I'll be back with more about last week's trip as soon as possible. Until then, I don't suppose it'll be too easy to find a Vikings shirt around here, eh?

"La La Land"

(by Demi Lovato) Demi Lovato - Don't Forget - La la Land

Today, I have my first official

...She is an elementary school graduate, aspiring artist, & avid reader. She has two super cool parents, a super cute little brother & a super crazy dog. She is a member of her PreTeen group at church. In her spare time, she loves to make origami, flip books & stop motion animation.

Without further ado, I give you my beautiful & talented daughter Elly!

Today I am going to guest blog for my mom. I am blogging about Kristin Rose Gordon's wedding which was on Saturday, June 12th. My brother & I were in it. He was the Ring Bearer, and I was the Flower Girl.

I'm not a big fan of dresses, but the worst part {no offense if you're reading this, Kristin} was having to wear gold sandals, which I would probably never wear again ~ and probably neither would my mom (we wear the same size). But Kristin remembered that I had worn brown Converse to her shower and said Cody and I could wear brown Converse!

So we looked all day for new ones. Then we went to Plato's Closet and found my size brown Converse ~ the only Converse there ~ for only $10!

When Mom asked if I wanted to guest blog, I instantly thought that "La La Land" by Demi Lovato says,

"Who said I can't wear my Converse with my dress?"

And I did!

P.S. I made the signature all by myself ~ my dad taught me Photoshop!

"This Will Be"

(by Natalie Cole) Natalie Cole - Anthology - This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)

Pretend it's still Saturday, & my babies were in Kristin's wedding today! {It was SO beautiful!} I tried to post this yesterday, but I was using my phone & had trouble getting the code to embed. I am home from a super great week, & I'm excited to tell you all about it as soon as I can! More to come...

"I Want to Hold Your Hand"

(by T.V. Carpio) T.V. Carpio - Across the Universe (Music from the Motion Picture) [Deluxe Edition] - I Want to Hold Your Hand

I hope y'all are having a good weekend! Mine has been great so far! I went to a crop at my friend Magnolia's last night. Her daughter went to school with my baby girl this year, & she asked Elly to come, too! I love that she has made so many new friends this year, & I especially love the fact that they are all very sweet girls with nice moms, too!

Today, we went to Wally & Teresa's (my builder's family that I've mentioned a couple of times). I completely failed to mention their car accident a couple of weeks ago. A guy ran a red light & hit their vehicle, causing it to roll. Teresa was hospitalized overnight, and Wally was in the hospital for a week with all of the ribs on his right side broken (front & back), lacerated liver & kidneys and a punctured lung (to name only a few of his injuries). I should have told y'all about it sooner so you could be praying! It's not too late, though ~ they could still use your prayers! Teresa is still in a lot of pain, & Wally has 8-12 weeks of recovery left. Also, please be praying for wisdom for them & that justice will be served in this situation! The driver who hit them didn't have insurance & hasn't received a ticket for anything that he did wrong. Anyways, we spent some time with their family today! I just love them!

I may not post much over the next week or so, because we're hoping to go up to the lake before Kristin's wedding next weekend (the one that my kids are in). I say "hoping" because I'm still waiting on Elizabeth's dress {for the wedding} to arrive! We're supposed to leave on Monday; but obviously, I can't leave town until it I have the dress! I called the store the other day, & they said it's in transit. My mister could bring it up later in the week, but I need to make sure everything is right with it, ya know? So, hopefully I get a call tomorrow saying that it arrived today, has been inspected & is ready for pick-up!

As for today's song, it's a Beatles song. Need I say more? Elly bought The Beatles: Rock Band Wii game last week, so I've heard this song quite a bit lately! I couldn't find the Beatles' version for my player, so I posted the one that was on Across the Universe!

I hope you have a super great week!

"School's Out"

(by Alice Cooper) Alice Cooper - School's Out - School's Out

Today is the kids' first official day of summer break! They got out of school early yesterday, and we spent the afternoon with Amy & Alex. Then after dinner, we celebrated by going to BerriBlends for frozen yogurt! We were not only celebrating the end of school, but super TAKS scores! Between the two kids, they got commended on 4 out of the 5 tests (& the one score that wasn't commended was very high in the "met standard" range)! Overall, it was a great school year for both of them. They made friends at their new school, were loved by their teachers (who wouldn't love them?!) & made great grades. I even made some new friends, too!

I'm hoping this summer will be fit, fun & frugal like last summer! For starters, Cody & I picked up Summer Movie Clubhouse tickets again. I think we'll have some Wii Fit contests amongst the family. We plan to take advantage of our neighborhood's super great pool, too! But I need help with other frugal ideas!

I hope y'all have a wonderful summer! & seriously, if you have any summer ideas, please fill me in!!

"Brand New Day"

(Tim Myers, featuring Lindsey Ray) Tim Myers - Brand New Day (feat. Lindsey Ray) - Single - Brand New Day (feat. Lindsey Ray)

I have officially completed my responsibilities for the school year, & I'm so relieved! Not that I mind doing any of it ~ I just don't like feeling the pressure that I have felt lately (with everything)! I attended the kids award ceremonies at school this morning, delivered the slideshow DVDs, then went to Elly's pool party at the country club. I stayed in the shade of a tree with a couple of other moms, yet somehow I got a little sunburn {not sure how that happened!} There are only about 5 hours of school until summer, and I am SO looking forward to sleeping in! But yesterday was craziness...

It started out as one of those days where everything that could go wrong DID, beginning with a near panic attack in the wee hours of the morning! Our friend Ryan was here until about midnight, & we attempted to burn the slideshow disc after he left. If you can believe this, about 40 pictures were missing! We have no idea how that happened. The pictures were right there in the file where they should've been, but we ended up having to redirect each one individually! It was craziness, and we didn't have a completed DVD to test out until almost 2:00 am! I know...if we had just done it earlier, we wouldn't have had that problem! I was waiting to hear back from a parent about a sensitive situation, so we were intentionally waiting until the last minute! Obviously, we didn't anticipate any problems, because it had been working fine! We also didn't know it would take over an hour to burn it to a disc!

I went to bed without even washing my face, and I forgot to turn my alarm back on after the long weekend...As you can probably figure out, I overslept & didn't wake up until 7:35, which is 5 minutes before school starts! I had planned on getting up early to wash my hair & stuff, because I had to be at the school for the slideshow. So I freaked out, because I didn't even have time to get dressed, much less get all beautified! I frantically ran in & woke the kids up. Then I ran back into my bedroom in a frenzy, waking Chris up & asking him to help the kids with whatever they needed! We managed to get to school only 5 minutes late. {My baby girl almost made it all the way through elementary school without being tardy. With only 3 days left of her elementary career, I ruined it for her!}

So, I went to the "Parents & Pastries" wearing day old makeup & a hat. I had hoped to look a little more classy, but whatever! I got the slideshow all set up in the library, & it was working fine. The projector had overheated at first, but it cooled off & things looked good. Parents started arriving, and it was almost time to play it when the projector overheated again! Elly's teacher came to the rescue by bringing the projector from her room. Of course, then the library computer wouldn't work with it, so she had to get her laptop from her room, too! We were able to play it without another glitch, & the parents I spoke with were quite excited to find out that they would all receive a copy of the DVD!

As soon as I got home from the school, I checked my phone (which, of course, I had left on the charging station in my earlier rush), & there was a message from the school. Cody had a read-a-thon all day but didn't have his blanket & pillow (again, because of the craziness that was our morning)! So, I grabbed his stuff & headed back to the school. On my way there I remembered that I was going to be at the Medical Center when the kids got home, so I also grabbed my garage door remote to give to the kids so they could get inside! I didn't even have to ask the lady at the front office to let me take Cody's stuff to him. She said she wasn't really supposed to allow me to take it, but apparently he had seemed somewhat frazzled! So I was able to go to both of the kids' rooms to remind them about their dad's scans & that I wouldn't be home. Sigh! It was only 10:00 in the morning, & I already felt like I had run a marathon or something!

Fortunately, the rest of my day was much less eventful! Chris had his scans, and we met with Dr L (the oncologist) immediately afterward. As he was looking them over on his computer & comparing them with the last scans, my heart was racing. I must say it's quite scary to see arrows & measurements that the technicians have noted, yet have to wait for the oncologist to explain everything! His lungs look fine, so that's super! There's something on his liver that measures about 5mm, but Dr L isn't worried about it & isn't entirely sure that it wasn't there when he had the last scan. It's the same size as another white spot near the spleen that was definitely on the last scan & hasn't grown since then. There's also a new lymph node that he isn't worried about, either. He intends to look at the spot on his liver when we do a PET scan in January, so I guess we're good 'til then. He said that while there's always a reason to worry with cancer, there's nothing on the scans that gives him reason to worry. I guess that means I'm not supposed to worry, either, huh? The following verse is one that I have continued to lean on throughout the entire cancer experience:

"You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in You,
whose thoughts are fixed on You!"
(Isaiah 26:3)

"With You"

(by Tricia Brock of Superchick) Tricia Brock - Reinvention - With You

"I will walk beside you
Good and bad times
Busk the streets for spare change
I'll hold the sign

Though the storms may blow down
All that we own
I will not be homeless
You are home

Through it all
I'll go down to the bottom with you
They can take it all away
But I'll be alright with you
As long as you are by my side
I'll be okay
I'll be alright
With you

Charge the gates with fury
Blaze through the lines
Do not fear for safety
Yours or mine
Walk the path untraveled
Faith be your guide
I will walk beside you
All our lives

Risk it all
I'll go through anything with you
They can take it all away
But I'll be alright with you
As long as you are in my life
I'll be okay
I'll be alright
With you"

I'm linking up with lovely Lauren at Living by Faith today. I have intended on joining up with "To Love Their Husbands Tuesdays" since she started the meme a month or so ago, but this is the first time I've actually done it! The idea is to go out of our way to show love to our husbands ~> above & beyond the norm. I tend to show love by taking care of things around the house, cooking dinner, etc. I always encourage young married couples to continue doing the little things they did to show each other love while they were dating. But honestly, I don't practice what I preach. I have good intentions but poor follow through. So, I've decided to be intentional about showing love to my mister in the ways that I used to do so many years ago.

So, the other day I realized that I would be passing right by my mister's office when I ran my errands. I decided to leave a little note on his car like I did just about every day when we were dating:

Now, technically, I didn't "go out of my way" (seeing as I was driving right by his workplace), but I made the plan ahead of time & actually followed through! Also, I meant to grab some cute paper from home before I left, but I forgot. Hence the "Errand" notepad I picked up at Old Navy. {I decided later that it was better that way, because back in the day we would write notes on whatever random piece of paper we could find!} Drop by Lauren's blog for links to other ladies' posts ~ they could give you some good ideas!
