"A Pirate Looks at 40"

(by Jimmy Buffet)

My mister turns 40 today!! Because he's a bit more introverted than I am, the kids & I knew he wouldn't want a party with 75 of his closest friends. So we decided on a smaller gathering. I got ahold of Erick to find out when a good weekend would be for him to drive down here and surprise Christopher, and we made our plans from there...

Erick ended up rolling in at midnight on a Friday/Saturday a few weeks before his birthday. Chris was exhausted and had been trying to go to bed for awhile. Cody & I had stalled him with YouTube videos as long as we possibly could when we heard Erick's bike outside. I was trying to discreetly film Christopher's reaction, so please forgive the shaky video:

Ha! He was so tired and confused. It was nearly three weeks before his birthday, so it didn't really make sense that Erick would come for a surprise visit. In the middle of the night, no less! :)

The boys went to a local brewery the next day, but they didn't take any pictures. That night, five of our friends met up with us for dinner. Then we got locked in a room for an hour...

ü

Really, we did! We played an escape game at the Houston Panic Room! We didn't escape in time, but it was super fun!!

Afterward, Brian said that the night was still young, so most everyone came to our house for awhile. Elly had made mini cheesecakes a couple of nights earlier, so I didn't even have to throw a dessert together!

I have something else up my sleeve for his actual birthday. Well, his sleeve, actually...More on that later! ;)

Codename: Kids Next Door theme song

It has been so long since I've posted one of these that I'm sure you've forgotten about this:

I have a little MISspeak for you, and I'll begin with the end...

"The code is your name. Do you know it?"

To which the person cautiously replied, "My name?"

See...I had assigned a certain code to someone -- I won't say his name because the code is his name --who was doing some work at the church. And [this isn't normally how we do things, but in this circumstance] I had been told to just make the code his name. Only there are no letters on this particular unit where he was supposed to use the code, so I had to assign the numbers that correspond to his name.

So when he came in to get his code, the above conversation took place. He handled it graciously -- meaning that he didn't totally laugh his head off and make fun of me! But when he replied so cautiously amused, I realized how completely ridiculous of a question that was and went on to explain what I just explained to you.

Ftr, he actually didn't know the numbers for his name, so we figured it out on our cell phones. ü

"Glow"

(by Donavon Frankenreiter)

Yet another thing that I failed to post about lately was our first youth event of the summer!

There's not much to say other than we play glow-in-the-dark games inside (because the rain caused us to bring it all indoors)...

And because of the nature of the majority of the night being dark, I mostly took pictures that weren't very glowy...

...But I thought it was a great excuse to post an old Donavon Frankenreiter favorite of mine! :)

"Injeel (Gospel)"

(by New Life AG Church, Chennai)

I'm just now posting this because I couldn't figure out what song I wanted to use. {Lame, I know. But that was my holdup. I had everything else done!} I decided on this song because this is the message of one of my favorite people in the whole wide world, who came to visit from India in May...Beek!

This was his first time to visit the United States. Lance and his church hosted him for most of his visit, and he traveled to Florida for a brief visit with supporters there, but he spent some time with several of us from my church, too! He shared a bit about what's going on in India during all three services...

Then he shared in more detail at a lunch afterward. We were able to pray over him, too, which means so much to him.

My mister and I got to spend the next day with him! We took him in to Houston so he could see more of the city, and our first stop was coffee at Blacksmith. We happened to run into Mallory, who was so kind as to take this picture of us! :)

We joked that we were doing hipster things, because not only did we visit a hipster coffee shop, but we also visited a hipster lunch spot!

Between coffee and lunch, we did touristy Houston things. I loaned him my camera so he could take pictures of anything that he wanted, and he loved it. He took so many pictures, and I took quite a few as well! At first, I wasn't sure if he'd enjoy the things I had planned for the day. It was already hot outside, and most everything involved being outside. But as we were finding a parking spot at Hermann Park, he saw a few of the area landmarks and said that he wanted to see them. Score!

After Hermann Park, we stopped by this fun landmark!

Then we went to the waterwall, which he really enjoyed!

He kept saying that he wanted to see my house, which was great because I had planned on cooking dinner for him there...

...but he ended up cooking half of it, because I was cooking Indian food and doing it wrong! :D

It was such a GREAT day!!

"Hard Love"

(by NEEDTOBREATHE)

Yay for another track from the album that releases this month!!

Speaking of month...it has been that long since I've posted. I'm sorry! But I have been working on several, so I hope to get back on track!

I did a thing to my hair...

{a subtle thing, but still!}

My kiddos went to youth camp!

We celebrated this guy on Father's Day!

And we met my dad for dinner that night:

We celebrated Clyde's 30th birthday with his family, Don, and Deb:

In track news, these boys qualified for Regionals in the 4x800...

...And then for Nationals a few weeks later!

So we're heading to Junior Olympics in a month!!

Cody qualified for Regionals in the 1500 but didn't make it to JO. His current PR is 4:40!

And these fantastic coaches have made all of the difference:

I know that there's so much that I'm leaving out. Elly has made dinner a few times with is not only helpful but super delicious. I've posted pictures on Instagram, but I've already filled this post with so many pictures that I figured you'd be OK not seeing them again. If I think of anything else worth mentioning, I'll fill you in later!

I hope y'all have a super great week! I have a feeling that mine will be magical! ü

"Great Night"

(by NEEDTOBREATHE)

I won't even try to explain why I haven't posted, but here are a few reasons why I haven't had the time...

Our river reaching an historic crest (4.5 feet higher than ever recorded) has taken up a lot of my thoughts and prayers over the past week or so. I am far enough from the river that it didn't affect my neighborhood, but many of our friends were not so fortunate. We have several friends whose homes didn't flood, but their neighborhoods did. There were boats scheduled at various times of the day to take people to the convenience store and such. The kids' school was closed on what was to be their last week (along with the junior high, middle school, and three elementary schools). They don't have to make up the days, and they have the choice to exempt all of their finals if they want. That is probably the only upside for those who have been greatly affected.

As you would expect with said flooding, there has been quite a bit of rain in our area. I have been to four track meets since I last posted, and three of them were affected by the weather... two lightning delays at one, two rain delays at another, and another was cancelled about a lap and a half before Cody's 1500...

Cody & his teammates won 1st place in the 4x800 at a meet again and 2nd place at another! He finished 4th in the 1500 at two meets. He has also run the 400 at a couple of meets, and he ran them in 60 seconds both times (which was a few seconds faster than the coach told him to aim for)!

We did a a little staff team-building a couple of weeks ago! We went bowling and ate yummy pizza. The team averages ended up being pretty close (maybe 12 points between best and worst).

{Jana's team won!}

The Spring Athletic Banquet and the Academic Awards Assembly were both held a few weeks ago. I was a failure when it came to pictures, though there really wasn't much of a photo opportunity at the banquet. Cody won the award for Graphics Design, which we were surprised to discover at the assembly!

I spent the evening of what was supposed to be the last day of school at Cody's friend Erin's house. She always has a pool party on the last day of school, and he has attended the past three or four years. We were originally supposed to pick the kids up between four and five, so I got there in time for that. A few of the kids did leave around that time, but Annette said they were welcome to stay longer. We ended up staying until after 10:00! It was fun, though. They swam, put makeup on the boys(!), rode around in a golf cart, ate hot dogs, and built a fire (to earn their mancards back!) while I visited with Annette (and later, Blake's dad). It turns out that the remaining two girls live in my neighborhood, so I drove them home. I'm sure there were better pictures taken that day, but I mainly took pictures during the makeup session. This is the least embarrassing one for the boys!

Laurien and I colored Elly's hair! She had been wanting to color the tips, so we went and got the stuff on the evening of Memorial Day. We had to bleach it a couple of times first. It wasn't quite as light as it needed to be in order to hold the color super well, but we didn't want to damage it anymore. We had never done this sort of thing before, so Mallory coached us through it via text! It was supposed to be a brighter blue, but for now it's a pretty green:

Other events not pictured include: a graduation party, a crawfish boil, coffee with Mal (to discuss Disney!), a shattered iPhone screen (this story may be good enough for my MISseries), a day with Beek (this is a post of its own!), a youth event (that I've decided will be a post as well), and Memorial Day with Amy's family, Kim's family, and Laurien! I may be forgetting a few things, but if there's anything important enough to share, I'll tell y'all about it another time.

Beek visited the United States for a couple of weeks!! As disappointed as I was to not be able to go to India this year, seeing him partially made up for it!

Sadly, Kristin missed him by four days. She has left for camp again this summer but came back for a wedding this weekend. She didn't have a lot of free time, but we met up for a few minutes on her way to the rehearsal!

As for the song, it's the latest release from NTB's upcoming album. I probably should've saved it for when I want to tell y'all about a great night, but I figure I had several great nights over the past few week! Plus I can always post it again! ü

I hope y'all have a great week! ♥
